Nitra (Slovak pronunciation: [ˈɲitra] ( listen); also known by other alternative names) is a city in western Slovakia, situated at the foot of Zobor Mountain in the valley of the river Nitra. With a population of about 79,472, it is the fifth-largest city in Slovakia. Nitra is also one of the oldest cities in Slovakia; it was the political center of the Principality of Nitra. Today, it is a seat of a kraj (Nitra Region) and an okres (Nitra District).

Dominating the city in all directions from its lofty perch on a hilltop above the Old Town, one should not miss the opportunity to visit this brooding 14th century medieval castle. A steep but non-stressful climb up the cobbled path from the Old Town brings one directly to the gates of the courtyard and the imposing statue of Pope John Paul II, who visited the castle and its integrated Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Emmeram, within, during his visit to the city. I would imagine that this design feature was to ensure the safety of the sanctuary during wartime over the centuries. Originally built in the Gothic style, Nitra Castle is impressive in its somber beauty and the apartments and artifacts are worth the climb up Zobor hill, if only for the great views of the town and its surrounds.
