After Meiji authorities tore down Nishiojō in 1871, little survived, but in modern times a gatehouse, tenshudai (donjon’s stone base) and 3-tier turret called Honmaru Ushitora Yagura (which means the sentry tower in the main bailey between the north-northeast and east-northeast) have been reconstructed faithful to history. One can enter the wooden yagura. The second storey is only half-height, likely used just for storage. These half-floors are an architectural quirk seen in Japanese castle building.
This album also includes pictures of a large teahouse and exhibits at a museum in the castle park (which includes yoroi sets and models of the original tenshu). The “Tea Palace,” as I nicknamed it, actually called Kyū-Konoetei, is a must visit in Nishio because the city is famous for its production of green tea, the taste of which is much sweeter than the bitter matcha served in Uji style.
History:
A fortification was present at this site as early as the fort of Ashikaga Yoshiuji, built in 1221. Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered Sakai Shigetada to expand the castle and a tenshukaku was erected in 1585. Nishiojō was also known as Tsurujō, meaning Crane Castle.
There are no plans to rebuild the main keep currently but it seems they may eventually get around to it, since they already reconstituted the large tenshudai (stone platform).

An overall cool place to go. If you go in the morning you can buy fresh fish at a decent price and who doesn't like fresh fish? The other part, the store is open throughout the day with many different kinds of seafood from fish to squid (yum!) Great place to take kids and for fish lovers!!

Held every year on August 15th during Obon, this festival was founded to comfort the souls of those who died in natural disasters, fell in battle, or drowned in the Yahagi River. As sutras are chanted and incense is burnt, approximately 2,000 Buddhist lanterns are floated on the river. The ensuing fireworks display lasts for an hour and features about 3,000 fireworks, lighting up the river together with the lanterns. The fireworks are set off from sandbars along the river, and watching the display at such close range-150 meters, soaring right up above you-makes for a spectacular visual and tactile experience.

We swam in three feet of Wakame seaweed when we were there. This beach was nasty, loads of drift trash floating trapped in the lagoon.
Potential of this place is awesome! If the city cleaned the Beaches in season and installed other taps/ showers. This would be the best beach in central Japan.
Needs effort from the locals and those living off tourist income.
Lift you effort people.
