The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

A typhoon was heading towards Japan on the day that I happened to schedule my cooking class. Wakana was fully prepared! She had even gone to the grocery store the day before to buy everything, in case the stores were closed. Given that so many tourist locations were closed because of the typhoon, this cooking class was a huge part of my short trip to Kyoto, and it was wonderful. First, can I just say that her website is very cute? I've never seen something so adorable. She was very on top of scheduling (I was not, I accidentally scheduled for the wrong weekend at first, and she handled the mistake wonderfully) and planned out some great side dishes. My main dish was okonomiyaki, which I had only just realized after trying it elsewhere in Japan, isn't my favorite, but it was very cool to learn how to do it. One of the main side dishes was a seaweed salad, which was delicious and healthy. She even had a sampling of Japanese desserts and performed a Japanese tea ceremony. Best of all, she had the recipes typed up for me to take home, including the names of all the desserts! Wakana was fantastic at explaining Japanese culture and answering my questions about everything from chopstick etiquette to how traditional Japanese archery works. She had a lot of good recommendations for activities to do next, even with the typhoon. I would highly recommend this cooking class as a wonderful way to experience Japanese culture.
