Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park

Reviewed By Michael B - Suffolk, United Kingdom

Overall, this is a nice place to go for the day near Yokota and Fussa. They have many airplanes and helicopters to view with a few that you can sit in or walk around. They also have a few things for kids to do like the gravity walker, flight simulator, Mission control and art room. They also have an IMAX movie theater that plays an aviation movie, but unfortunately is all in Japanese.
Outside of the museum, there is a big open park area which is nice to bring your lunch or snacks while visiting.
Strollers are allowed in the museum and they have elevators too. In addition there is a small gift shop and restaurant that offers a buffet lunch and other snacks and drinks.
Keep in mind that parking is limited around the area. If you get there early and during the weekdays, should not be a problem.
The price for the museum was about 1,000 yen per adult with small children free.
The staff was helpful, despite the limited English (or our limited Japanese). Overall, it is nice to visit when wanting to stay near Yokota, approximately 30 mins drive near Seibu Dome.

Heirin-ji Temple

Reviewed By Adam123474 - Ann Arbor, Michigan

Heirin-ji is an extraordinary Zen temple, not just for its aesthetic charms, but also because it is a "working" temple. This place is not an artifact, but a 600-year-old living, breathing example of the Zen tradition.
The grounds are most famous for their maple trees (autumn) as well as plum blossoms (early spring). This is a much better place to get a feel for Zen temples, and temple life, than you will find in the overcrowded tourist centers.
Definitely worth the short hike from Tokyo!

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum

Dedicated to the architecture of the late Edo period, this outdoor museum showcases historic buildings, including 200-year-old farmhouses and specialty shops filled with reproduction products, such as a soy sauce shop, Japanese umbrella shop, and stationary store.

Delightful for any visitor and highly recommended for those interested in architecture or everyday life. The Mitsui villa and the rebuilt shopping street are utter highlights, and so is the replica of the onsen bathing house. The Mitsui villa is both zen and fancy and has an exquisite garden.
Koganei park (free entry) is pretty cool too, and has a steam train locomotive on display.
Beware: Google Maps may make you get off the train at the Higashi-Koganei station but the Musashi-Koganei station (oen stop further) has better bus connections !

Shakujii Park

Reviewed By bjp257 - Allen, Texas

Just a short walk from Shakujii-Koen station is this beautiful gem. It's a fairly large park with a variety of activities set around a lake. I might have missed it except for the size of the lake on the map. There are information plaques on the trees, trails throughout, a small temple, paddle boat rentals, fishing & a small bandstand. After several visits I still have not seen the whole park. I prefer to take in in small parts. But it's a very relaxing environment. And there are always lots of families with small children, young adults exercising & seniors meeting to chat. The snack area has everything including prices written in Japanese. So if you feel adventurous, just point & nod.

It's a great place for different kind of people to go (it is suitable for all age range)
There is a Starbucks there which has many different kind of flavour. My son has tried a chocolate drink and it's really cheap (¥170) and delicious.
There is also an oil station for car.
You should all go to this place when you are desperate for food because there's a food court that is quite large.
In this stop, there's a shop that sell sweet-potato related food only, we would strongly recommend you all to give it a go even sweet potato wasn't your "thing".
There's another cafe shop in the station which prepare coffee on the spot for you. The coffee bean they used are organic, and they'd do distil coffee, which gives a very strong taste (taste best without sugar)
There's also free drinks available in the station for those who are thirsty) cold/hot water, green tea and another kind of tea which I have forgotten the name of which)

In the end of March or beginning of April, violet coloured graceful flowers of Erythronium japonicum are found in their colonies spreading on the slopes beside the river.
Near this river, we can see fireflies in the evening of a certain week in June. If you are lucky, you may see kingfishers.
All those are very rare in Tokyo. Kiyose is a good place of remained natural beings, with just an hour trip from the center of Metropolis.

A large parkland, which includes the Tokyo Outdoor Architectural Museum which appears on many tourist lists. I haven't visited the Museum, but enjoyed a day out in the park with my Japanese resident son and granddaughter aged 5.
Beautiful meadows of poppies at this time of year, and a lovely Koinobori, the carp flags for Children's day on May 5. Many local families were picnicking, riding bicycles and using the variety of giant slides, jumping devices, climbing walls and the like. Street performers too. I only touched the surface of the park on this visit of several hours. You can buy food and rent bikes by the hour. A green oasis in the city for an active day out or a snooze in the sun.
