What to do and see in Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur: The Best Specialty Museums

June 1, 2021 Ying Subia

The deep blue waters of the Cote d’Azur are the dramatic backdrop for elegant Nice. Breathe in the fresh Mediterranean air as you stroll the waterfront promenade, or get an eagle eye of the whole city from atop Castle Hill. The pedestrians-only Place Rossetti is the heart of the city, with a grand fountain, vibrant buildings, and the beautiful Sainte-Réparate cathedral giving it a provincial French feel.

Lucky artist to have a custom made house for his works - and even already during his lifetime! Especially with the wonderful Biblical Message cycle in mind! The Biblical Message was what I enjoyed viewing the most and it made me thinking of not so lucky Alfons Mucha, who had painted beautiful poetic monumental cycle Slav Epic and his paintings are "homeless" so far. I like the way the Biblical Message is presented in this museum. I extremely enjoyed viewing the documentary about Marc Chagall, not only because the documentary was well done, but was screened in a "theatre" room with comfortable chairs, with stained glass windows by Marc Chagall himself and there even was a harpsichord decorated by him there. In other rooms there were also his other paintings, sculptures, drawings and ceramics to be seen. Also an interesting mosaic in the yard to be admired through a glass wall. I highly recommend seeing this museum.

The first floor was shut, but my visit was very enjoyable nevertheless. The interior decoration is very ornate and unusual, and I very much wished there had been a concert going on I could stop and enjoy in the music room. I felt that the inhabitants had just slipped out for a while, and might return at any minute. The highlight has to be the fine diverse collection of historic musical instruments, such as a theorbe made in 1766 by Fidele Barma, part of the Gautier collection that was left to the city. There were all sorts of different variations on standard instruments, some a mixture between instruments, and a fine display of eighteenth century harps. In 1538 representatives of Spain,France and the Papal States met in Nice for a peace conference, that was a massively important musical event, all the parties bringing with them performers and composers. Christobalde Morales composed a Jubilate Deo Omnis Terra on this occasion, the earliest extant piece of music associated with Nice. As background music was playing, I hoped to buy a CD of music played on some of the historic instruments, but sadly the shop was rather disappointing, and didn't have anything like that available, a lost opportunity. Not withstanding that, this is a wonderful place and with the Musee Massena, a 'must see' in my opinion for any visitor to Nice who loves history.

Musee Archeologique de Nice-Cimiez

This site museum is located on the hill of Cimiez, ancient city of Cemenelum, capital of the roman territory of the Alpes Maritimae. This major archaeological site shows the remains of three complete thermal complexes (1st to 3rd century), streets, a residential area with its shops, as well as an amphitheater. There is also a paleo-Christian group consisting of a cathedral and a baptistery corresponding to a last manifestation of urban life in Cemenelum (from the fifth century). The museum, inaugurated in January 1989, succeeds the first site museum created in 1960 in the villa of Arènes, current museum Matisse. The collections concern the ages of the metals, the Antiquity and develop until the high Middle Ages. They evoke the life of Cemenelum and the province of the Alps Maritimae, through the many objects discovered during archaeological excavations from 1950 to 1969 in the site acquired by the municipality of Nice, but also beyond.

My daughter in law and I visited the museum , after visiting the Matisse gallery and the Franciscan monastery in Cimiez . What a wonderful way of spending a day - the wild hyacinths were blooming , bluebird day with sun shining , and very interesting exhibits . Spectacular Roman ruins , including the circus .

I saw this temple because I missed the way to the Matisse museum. And since I already got there, I visited it. And it was indeed a great place to see. I would say the external architecture would not be so impressive, yet interesting, but the interior is really nice. The frescoes on the walls, the ceiling, the religious art, the arches, etc, make for a charming atmosphere. A great place for spiritual relaxation. The museum is attached to the Cimiez monastery, and a beautiful garden is found next to the building. Taking pictures inside the museum is forbidden.
