What to do and see in Newcastle upon Tyne, England: The Best Cultural Tours

March 9, 2022 Emerita Lamoureux

Once a shipbuilding city, Newcastle's flashier claim to fame is nightlife. Throw in a heap of premium restaurants serving foods from all over the world and it's no wonder young partiers choose to blow their hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned) cash in Newcastle. While these amenities are certainly a draw for the hipsters and culture-seekers, it's the locals that make Newcastle a truly special place to visit. "Geordies," as they are often called, embody the pride, industriousness and resilient spirit of their city.

Starting as a Roman fort and growing to become one of the major cities of the Industrial Revolution, Newcastle has a fantastic story to tell. You’ll hear all the best bits on this three-hour guided walk of Newcastle, while visiting many of the city’s most significant sites. We’ll take you inside the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas and then Newcastle’s Castle – both parts of the historic core of the city. Built in 1080 by one of the sons of William the Conqueror, Newcastle’s castle has defended against Scottish attacks, including a failed assault by William Wallace (of Braveheart fame). St. Nicholas Cathedral church is first mentioned in 1092 and developed as the primary parish in Newcastle. This tour is a great way to immerse yourself in the history and sights of Newcastle, to discover how the city has changed the world. Please contact us for details of solo traveler bookings. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk in York! We had very little time in the city and it was then great when Alex booked us in on a tour where Dudley then took us on an "exploration" of the city as he called it. We saw a huge amount of sights and heard lots about the history of the city! Really awesome two hours! Thanks!
