Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum

Authentic - Renowned - World Class Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum is located on a spectacular rocky outcrop overlooking the inland city of Goulburn NSW. Rocky Hill War Memorial tower opened in 1925 to commemorate local women and men who served in World War One. The onsite museum has continued to collect since its opening in 1927 and with the completion of a new state of the art museum building in 2020 the collection is now exhibited across 2 buildings . The collection includes rare and unique objects of National Significance including WW1 war trophies and a prison cell door from Changi prison which has been installed in the museum. This substantial collection is widely celebrated as a moving cultural heritage experience dedicated to commemorating and interpreting compelling stories, including Goulburn’s own stories, of the men and women who have served Australia in conflict.

We visited the War Memorial this week and were pleasantly surprised by the trip up. When we arrived in Goulburn to visit, this tower stood out on top of the hill and we had to know what it was. Upon learning that it was a war memorial, I just needed to go see it. Once you arrive, there is the wall of remembrance and an eternal flame. But as you walk up the many flights of stairs, it is the images of the war - large photos from different battlefields - that really draw your attention and make you pause for thought. It is a very striking way to capture the visitor's attention as they are on the wall all the way up the stairs. The view from the top of the tower is amazing - 360 degrees around Goulburn and the surrounding district. We didn't go to the museum as we were time-poor but it will be something we do on the next visit.

Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre

We had an amazing visit on a rainy winters day. For a small fee, visitors get a guided tour of an incredible collection of engines, coaches and memorabilia relating to Australia's railway history. Our guide had been a fireman on steam trains and conveyed a great love of the history as well as the technicalities in a laid back and interesting way. Great for kids (Harry Potter! Thomas the Tank engine!) and adults alike. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum

Experience the age of steam: Step back in time to the late 1800s when Goulburn was one of the first regional centres to supply piped drinking water to its residents. The Goulburn HIstoric Waterworks has remained intact with a pumphouse and original 1883 working steam beam engine. This rare facility, set on the picturesque banks of the Wollondilly River, is the only complete, operational, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location, in the Southern Hemisphere. The buildings and engines are of national significance and are registered with the National Trust of Australia. Picnic & BBQ area, playground. Engines operate throughout the year. See website for dates. Home of the Goulburn Waterworks Steampunk Victoriana Fair.

This is an amazing historical site to behold in Goulburn, set on the banks of the picturesque Wollondilly River at Marsden Weir. We were greeted with a friendly volunteer and it was great to get to know more about the history of this place! We were told they run the pump a few times a year so you can get the opportunity to see it in running order as well. There is also a nice picnic area onsite by the water. “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

St Clair Villa Museum and Archive

St Clair Villa in Goulburn was built by James Sinclair, a builder, contractor and architect, between 1843 and 1849. It is a unique example of an early provincial villa of the late Georgian period of a classical design. In 1970 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Governor Macquarie's visit to Goulburn in 1920, St Clair was saved from demolition and the villa was purchased by the Goulburn Council. Today St Clair Villa is one of the oldest remaining houses in Goulburn, and is on the National Trust of Australia register and the Register of the National Estate. It houses important local archives and museum collections including textiles, domestic items, historic photographs, parish maps, Goulburn newspapers, diaries and journals related to the early pioneer families from Goulburn and surrounding districts, providing insights into the region's rich historical past. There is a changing program of annual exhibitions.
