With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

This isn't like Tombstone. There are no novelty photo booths or actors roaming the streets. (There's also no food. Stop in Winston to get snacks and drinks, and to use the bathroom!) This is an ACTUAL ghost town. If that's your jam, you're going to love this. I had a great time learning about the history of the town from the people who helped give it new life it as an attraction. Talk to Don & Donna and they'll tell you everything you want to know and more. Make sure you buy Don's book in the gift shop! It is a really interesting read: action, adventure, death by skunk. While you're there, please be polite and don't take photos of peoples' houses. People actually do live here so if there are signs of life, no photos. Talk to Don & Donna first if you aren't sure.

Shakespeare Ghost Town is a historic ghost town that dates back to the 1850's. Shakespeare is open for tours daily from 10am - 5pm MT (as long as a tour guide is avaliable) so call first just be be sure a tour guild is avaliable.
We loved everything about this tour. Our guide was especially knowledgeable, and took a lot of extra time to give us a wonderful, personal tour of Shakespeare. It has a fascinating history. This is one of the best old west tours I've been on. It should be much more well-known and well-attended. Go if you're ever in the area!

Get off the super highway and go to this friendly quirky historical ghost town that serves up a killer hatch chile burger, an icy cold draft (which is incredible considering the heat in the summer), listen to a live band, shop at any of the fun and interesting shops, see an old locomotive, go to a museum, don't miss Shugarmen's Chocolate (say that again), you may get lucky and see a parade even, and so many photo ops for your social media. This is the perfect stop between the airport of Albuquerque and Santa Fe to kick off your desert adventures.
