Established in 1980 More than a few small wineries have started in a garage, but we may be the only Winery to begin that way, move on to bigger and better quarters, and still be in a garage. Founded in 1980 in a small garage on the outskirts of town, in 1982 the Winery moved to its present location, the historic Miners Foundry Garage, on Spring St in downtown Nevada City. Remarkably, the Winery is located less than two blocks from where the original Nevada City Winery stood over a century ago. The Winery was begun by Allan Haley, a Nevada County native with a European wine education and a dream of bringing wine making back to our region. In 1880 there were over 300 acres of grapes in the County. In 1980 when the Winery opened there was one small vineyard, recently planted. Twenty years later there are again well over 300 acres of grapes and the wine industry is flourishing once more.

Wheyward Girl Creamery is a small full-service, cut to wrap, cheese shop in beautiful, historic downtown Nevada City. We carry regional, domestic and imported cheeses and hope to be producing our own cheeses soon. We also offer hands on cheese classes three times per month. Each class features a different type of cheese. You'll not only learn cheesemaking but you'll learn about salting, waxing, brine and aging. PH meters will be addressed along with other cheesemaking equipment. We'll discuss ingredients - rennet, culture, salt, milk and milk types. For more information about our schedule, please call the shop or visit our Facebook page!
This is always one of my first stops when in NC. The cheese selection is always amazing and you can sample anything and everything. Great assistance by the owners when trying to find that right pairing. Cannot say enough good!!

Operated by the non-profit Nevada Theatre Commission, it is the venue for live theatrical plays by most of the area’s production companies, including LeGacy Productions, Sierra Stages, Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra, Paul Emery Presents and others. The Theatre also hosts numerous musical events, a film series (every Sunday night), film festivals, magic and variety shows and community events.

We visited the Museum with our 7 year old granddaughter and were pleasantly surprised with how fun it is to visit here. We started with a 10:40 am ride on the railcar. We had made reservations and found that to be a good idea. Our desired time slot was full. See the website for contact information and location. From the site: “Located in Nevada City, California, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum is dedicated to the preservation of local transportation history and artifacts from the narrow gauge railroad era. Visitors are offered a docent-led historical tour of the museum, rail yard, and restoration shop. There is no admission charge. The Museum exhibits a collection of railroad and aviation artifacts, photographs, and documents for visitors and historians alike. Exhibits include the NCNCRR Engine 5, rolling stock, an early steam automobile, and other examples of Nevada County’s transportation history.” There is also a restored horse drawn beer wagon that delivered kegs to Saloons in days of olde. In the outdoor rail car yard, you may walk through some of the cars and sit in them. Pretty fun stuff here. The ride through the trees and grounds of a Glamping Campground and the meadow of a vintage hotel. It’s Wonderful. Complimentary cool drinks and knowledgeable Docents. This facility is all Volunteer/Docent run and depends on community support/donations to keep it going. Please take a check and enjoy a tax write-off for this 501(c)(3), so worthy of our support. A charming piece of California History.
