I made it to my fourth "corner" of Japan - the Easternmost corner - and I didn't do enough research beforehand. There are several museums and they all talk about getting islands back from Russia. I thought it was a right-wing conspiracy and was feeling odd until I went up the observation tower and saw just how close the islands were! Signal Rock would probably be a half-hour walk if the water was solid. So don't get weirded out. It's a beautiful (though windy) spot and I went into the ramen shop and had the freshest crab and salmon roe rice bowl of my life! I actually flew into Kushiro and drove. It's a long drive, but pretty, and a lot of people drive faster than the speed limit. (50kph or 30mph is way too slow for a rural highway for this American.)
