Jockin Bernad is a fisherman from Negombo since 20 years, he knows everything about the dried fish process and the market and you can find him at the Negombo fish market! For a small tip he could be your best local experience on the island. He was so sweet and he speaks really good English and German!

This area is the canal and wetlands where you can take a boat trip to spot wildlife. We had a morning trip from a company called Muthurajawela Visitor Centre, which was excellent. You ride on a small boat with a guide who has a keen eye and will spot the birds and other wildlife you travel initially along the canal and then out into the lagoon and wetlands. We were out for nearly two hours and saw lots of wonderful birds, monitor lizards, monkeys, a small crocodile and even jellyfish. It's a great morning out and very relaxing.

The Angurukaramulla Temple is an awesome 300+ year old temple in Negombo. It's got an epic dragon's mouth entrance and also the ruins of a historic library. ... It's best known for its epic statue of the Buddha, and its dragon-entrance - inside you find detailed murals that date back

The Negombo Fish Markets are more than just a place that sells fish. This is where the fishing catch is unloaded, scaled, cut up and then dried out. There is fish as far as the eye can see. This whole process is messy, it smells, but is so unusual. The area of the fishing vessels stretches for a long way and it is an amazing experience to wander around. A must see in Negombo.

I'm not going to tell you that you will be visiting a gothic middle age European superb church, it's a church worth visiting because of its architectural design outside and simply because there aren't so many big churches in Sri Lanka. Try to see it on Sundays when it's crowded, kids are playing and old people are praying. It is somewhere nice and peaceful to be for half an hour.
