Les Machines de L'ile

The Machines de l’Ile is an artistic and a tourist project. It is a blend of the invented worlds of Jules Verne, the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci, and the industrial history of Nantes, on an exceptional site in the former shipyards. A ride on the 12-meter tall Great Elephant, climb aboard the Marine Worlds Carrousel of 27 moving sea creatures or the Heron Tree to fly over the hanging gardens.

Not big but pretty cool museum. It has all kinds of rocks, stuffed animals, live snakes, fossils, shells, birds, etc.... Our kids (and we) really enjoyed it. It's also free for kids and a very small price for adults.

The visit lasted for over 90 minutes, on a guided tour. The guide was very knowledgeable. Lots of going up and down ladders, so unfortunately would be difficult for some disabled. It is a warship, so that is expected. Definitely a very interesting experience, especially for someone who served at sea a number of years ago. Well worth a visit.

Memorial de l'Abolition de l'Esclavage

Reviewed By 395stashas - Castries, Caribbean

Had the opportunity to visit in July; went on the recommendation made by my uncle who is from France. Never knew of its existence but glad that I got to visit. It is a memorial in the city of Nantes in northwest France, dedicated to the memory of slaves who made a journey to the city before being transported to the colonies of the New World. I had no idea that Nantes, among several other cities and towns along the French Atlantic Coast, played such a big role in the slave trade until I went to the memorial. The monument's design is very captivating; the lighting, colours and materials used in its construction, not to mention the audio heard as you pass the entrance, immediately captures the attention of the audience visiting, from beginning to end. I experienced a mix of emotions upon seeing the various routes of the slave trade outlined, reading the accounts of actual slaves as well as inspirational quotes from famous Black leaders and slavery in the world today. I highly recommend a visit. Plus it is free.

Dobree Museum

The museum is actually close for renovation. The Dobree museum is a museum of art, archaeology and history. It is located in Nantes, in the Western part of the Graslin district. It's a one-hectare estate that is home to three buildings: the Dobree mansion, the manoir de la Touche and the Voltaire building. The museum is currently closed while it undergoes renovations. Usually, in the spring and summer, its hosts several events such as the night of Museums, The Archaeology Days et du Heritage Days, tours of the Dobree Tower as part of the program of the Voyage a Nantes... The collections of the Dobree museum are accessible to the public thanks to its "off site" program. The departmental Dobree museum received the label "musee de France".
