The village was nationally recognised for the preservation of the thatched homes in the countryside. Many citizens continue to farm as their ancestors did but now may use modern tools. Some of the houses have been turned into galleries, cafes, temporary housing and museums. The little indigo museum is also located in this village.
Some people have moved here from other part so Japan, attracted to its serene beauty and proximity to nature, including the founder of the little indigo museum.
There are several local restaurant in the area.
From Sonobe or Hiyoshi JR train stations, a bus goes to and from the village. You can also rent a car to get there, taking 90 minutes. The roads are curvy and hill, but the roads our good. Also, your accommodation may also arrange transportation, which mine did. they gave us bikes to get around the area, but it is better to be on foot in the village.
The area is crowded on the weekends and for national holidays when Japanese tourists visit.

We had an impromptu lunch at the Hiyosh Springs restaurant after hiring motorbikes on a Sunday in Kyoto and heading out to the Maiyama hills for the day. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and the staff were so helpful. There are also options to enjoy the spacious lawns and Gardens (the cherry trees were in full blossom on the day of our visit) or to visit the onsen and enjoy the hot water. Well worth a visit!

We had lunch at Springs Hiyoshi and then drove our motorbikes around the dam. Beautiful, peaceful setting accessed by a suspension road bridge.

The museum is actually a traditional farmhouse (Kayabuki). It was snowing heavily and the village was deserted so I though it was closed. Then a kind old lady opened the door and welcomed us in. You have to pay ¥300 to gain entrance. We were then given some pamphlets and was shown around. You get to see the sleeping quarters, dining/living area, old traditional toilet, attic, storage room, farm implements, artefacts, etc. We were then served hot tea afterwards. It was a nice insight on how the locals used to live. Worth a visit for a token price when in the area.

Japan is full of beautiful parks and this one is no exception. My daughter enjoyed the playground and mingled with the local kids as well.

There is so much to see, do & experience here. There is the Onsen, the Grax camping ground, the cafes and, to add to your excitement, the Ruri River Valley Natural Park.
This is an ideal area for the kids to roam around the many animal displays and be educated on the names of the many species. It's not far from all the facilities. And close access to all the main cities in Kansai.

Located in Kayabuki no Sato, a hamlet of thatched houses
Hiroyuki Shindo runs The Little Indigo Museum along with his wife and son. The museum is housed in the largest traditional house in the thatched village, Kayabuki no Sato, located 1 hour's drive from Kyoto. The upstairs has been converted into an exhibition space where Mr. Shindo exhibits his textile collection. All of the textiles contain indigo but come from all over the world, including Japan. On the ground floor is Mr. Shindo's atelier where he dyes natural materials in his indigo vats. Examples of his own art are on display. You can buy a souvenir of his indigo-dyed work in the reception. The museum is normally open on weekends, closed Thursday and Friday. Admission is 250 yen

I went there on bank holiday in Japan. So many visitors strolled along the roads. We must park our cars at the parking before we entered the village. I noticed that some groups came on big bikes. Fishing was activities that looked very popular. Try ramen at the restaurant near the parking. Good taste.

A fireworks festival held on the banks of the Oigawa River about five minutes walk from JR Yagi Station, it used to be known as the "Yagi Fireworks Festival." It started in 1947, shortly after the end of the war, to commemorate those who died in the war, and this continues to this day with about 500 lanterns set afloat to create a magical atmosphere before the fireworks display. The festival mood is enhanced by an opening event, featuring song and dance, and a village of street stalls.
