What to do and see in Mostar, Herzegovina-Neretva Canton: The Best City Tours

January 28, 2022 Darwin Bolte

Mostar (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [mǒstaːr]) is a city and municipality in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inhabited by 105,797 people, it is the most important city in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital, and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

We absolutely loved our day trip with Pedrag! We were there about a year ago but the review wouldn't let me choose that far back. Pedrag was very informative, hospitable and always ensuring we were enjoying ourselves. The breakfast was large and fills you right up. Our meal was fantastic for lunch as well! The sites are great and the waterfall is amaaazing. You're guaranteed to have a fantastic day out whether you're into history or the scenery. Thank you so much my friend! We hope to see you again soon. You should also stay at their hostel - Hostel David. The staff are all incredibly lovely and we highly recommend staying there as we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Mostar :-)

In Mostar, a town built of stone on sheer rock, located on the banks of the torrential River Neretva, and having one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe, you will come face to face with traces of the past in numbers rarely found elsewhere. You will especially be impressed with the abundance and variety of the monuments dating from the Ottoman rule which penetrated furthest west here and, in meeting with Western culture, gave rise to a unique contrast – a kaleidoscope of Oriental, Byzantine and Western civilizations. The Stari Most (Old Bridge), which stands alone in beauty and elegance, crosses the River Neretva in a high arch, and is therefore referred to as the petrified crescent.

We booked a small group tour but since we were the only two people booked on this day (the perks of traveling off-season!), we inadvertently got a private tour for the price of a shared tour. The entire day was enjoyable without being too tiring since the driving distances are short. Our guide was Esmer, who was really knowledgeable, sweet, and flexible. It’s undoubtedly a good idea to book in advance if you’re visiting Mostar in the summertime when their tours are far more popular. We got to spend time in Blagaj, explore Počitelj (which turned out to be our favorite stop!) and see Kravice Waterfalls. Since we went during the winter, we couldn't swim, but the falls were nearly empty and peaceful so it was still worthwhile. At the end of the tour, Esmer took us to the hills surrounding Mostar and taught us all about the events of the war in Mostar. It was one of the most informative tours we took in the country. I highly recommend the company. They were very professional, our day was beautiful and memorable, and we had some flexibility on our tour since it was just us.

Dado was an excellent driver and guide. The van we rode in was roomy and very comfortable. Dado created a perfect itinerary for a one-day excursion from Dubrovnik and shared interesting information about the sites we visited. He gave us just the right amount of time at each stop. When the cable car to the top of the mountain in Dubrovnik went dark, he graciously drove us to the top at no extra charge.
