It's sad what happened to the Island and it's people but the volcano is majestic and beautiful. Worth the day trip over, we're contemplating coming back for a 4 day weekend.

Guided Tours
We had a great time in Montserrat with tour guide Charles Daly. His "all-inclusive" rate made life so much easier. He even purchased the ferry tickets for us. We just had to show up at the Antigua ferry dock and give our names and everything else was included (return tickets same day, refreshments, lunch, admissions to sites). You can communicate with him thru Whatsapp and he always returns calls and is so friendly. He loves his job! He can be reached at 1-664-495-7172 Charles was right on time at the dock. He has lived on the island for most of his life and knows everything. He also has special permissions to enter the active volcano sites that most people don't have. We saw the destruction of the volcano which was very sad. He show us before and after pictures. We also toured a museum, went to a coffee shop and learned some history and went to the "top of the world" (a really tall mountain that is difficult to get to the top of). I definitely recommend this tour!

The Oriole Walkway Trail starts at Hill Top near the Bank of Montserrat and runs SW to Cassava Ghaut. Highlights include an abundance of flora and fauna. Excellent views of the Silver Hills, the northern part of the island and Olveston can also be seen from this trail.
Like the other trails on Montserrat you 'can' do this yourself, unguided, but it has the potential for may wrong turnings, with few signs (even getting to the start of the trail from Hilltop Coffee House can be tricky). Doing it with a guide such as Scriber, as we did, is really recommended and allows you to revisit and know the route to follow. It is steep in places and obviously the difficulty is not just your own fitness, it also varies according to weather - its a rain forest so expect rain in some months and paths are uneven and can be slippery. Don't expect a well signposted trail as per footpaths in the UK, nor a highly prepared and marked trail with picnic places as per the US - its a hiking trail as hiking should be! Another reason to take a guide is to get the best understanding of local flora and fauna, including friendly tarantulas (in a hole in the middle of the path), and the trails titular bird, the oriole. We loved every last second, ending watching humming birds feed. Take a guide, and go!

Duberry-Cassava Trail starts in Woodlands. A short walk will take you to a picnic area and to ruins of unknown use and origin. This area is ideal for a relaxing afternoon with the chirping of birds and a trickling steam in the background.
