It's sad what happened to the Island and it's people but the volcano is majestic and beautiful. Worth the day trip over, we're contemplating coming back for a 4 day weekend.

The Oriole Walkway Trail starts at Hill Top near the Bank of Montserrat and runs SW to Cassava Ghaut. Highlights include an abundance of flora and fauna. Excellent views of the Silver Hills, the northern part of the island and Olveston can also be seen from this trail.
Like the other trails on Montserrat you 'can' do this yourself, unguided, but it has the potential for may wrong turnings, with few signs (even getting to the start of the trail from Hilltop Coffee House can be tricky). Doing it with a guide such as Scriber, as we did, is really recommended and allows you to revisit and know the route to follow. It is steep in places and obviously the difficulty is not just your own fitness, it also varies according to weather - its a rain forest so expect rain in some months and paths are uneven and can be slippery. Don't expect a well signposted trail as per footpaths in the UK, nor a highly prepared and marked trail with picnic places as per the US - its a hiking trail as hiking should be! Another reason to take a guide is to get the best understanding of local flora and fauna, including friendly tarantulas (in a hole in the middle of the path), and the trails titular bird, the oriole. We loved every last second, ending watching humming birds feed. Take a guide, and go!

Duberry-Cassava Trail starts in Woodlands. A short walk will take you to a picnic area and to ruins of unknown use and origin. This area is ideal for a relaxing afternoon with the chirping of birds and a trickling steam in the background.

We hiked in (whew doggie) via Rendezvous Nature Trail and enjoyed the quietude, sailboats moored just off the shore and most enjoyably the Tropicbirds with their long long tails and playful flying nature. The surf was too rough for us to snorkel but we could see how, in softer seas it would be excellent.

Trip Advisor picture is quite apt. This black sand beach is a gem enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, though never truly crowded. The beach serves as a turtle nesting ground and officials take that stewardship quite seriously. Off shore a number of man made coral reefs are underway, as well. There are changing rooms and bathrooms as well as shaded picnic tables. We didn’t swim but judged the surf to be a bit rough.

Runaway Ghaut Trail takes you westward through a winding decent. Highlights include lush riparian rain forest. A number of fruit trees can be seen enroute. There are also more than 20 species of birds which may be seen along the trail.

Rendezvous Nature Park leads to a secluded beach via a rigorous hike just beyond a shipyard and concrete business. The hike takes you up and over a dry mountain, complete with cable hands guides as you hike down to the beach. Take plenty of water. A family of Tropic Birds live above the beach and when the surf is calm enough, good snorkeling.

The "Cot" located also in the Centre Hills. The Hike starts above the National Trust Compound. Highlights include the ruins of "The Cot", the one time summer cottage of the influential Sturge Family. A hike through the lush vegetation also affords breathtaking views of the villages below including some of the Exclusion Zone. A duck pond is located further along the trail.
