Jazz aficionados know Montreux as the home of the famed jazz festival. And where else will you find a statue of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury? But even those who aren't music fans will find respite in this resort town on the Swiss Riviera: The wineries here are world renowned, the Chateau de Chillon is an impressive example of a medieval castle and the views of the Dents-du-Midi are breathtaking. Walk on the lake promenade, ride the cogwheel train or wander Old Montreux to taste its Edwardian flavor.

Beautiful vineyards even during winter, it is worth it if you are in the region of Montreux. My friend took me there with her car and we had a beautiful view of the lake with the vineyards. I am sure it looks even more beautiful when the weather is clear and when they are more green. It was the first week of January.

Hold your breath and board this train that climbs, climbs, and climbs some more. Nothing scares it, neither the steep slopes nor the snow. At the Rochers-de-Naye, at over 2,000 metres altitude, what amazing scenery! Lake Geneva in all its glory. Don’t leave the place without saying hello to the marmots, the mascot of the Alps. A tip: it is said that this is where the real Santa Claus spends the winter.
A classic Swiss train ride with spectacular views leading to the nostalgic summit building and small ski area. Rochers de Naye features beautiful hikes, Mongolian huts, marmot villages, an alpine garden and even Santa’s office depending on the season. A must visit if in the Montreux area. If the weather is clear the views are absolutely stunning.
