Getting sick on vacation is a major drag, but if you have to be under the weather, Montpellier is an ideal place to do it. People have studied medicine here for centuries—the Moors established medical schools in the 9th century, and the Université Montpellier’s school of medicine was founded in 1220. Once the local docs give you a clean bill of health, explore the cathedral, mansions and opera house.

“The medieval and rustic getaway in the Herault Valley “with Belle Tourisme was certainly a high point of our recent trip to France. Our guide, Isabelle, was interesting, accommodating, and made sure that we had a memorable day. She provided a good choice of activities from cave exploring, to meeting local artisans and visiting their workshops. We were enthralled with St. Guillem Le Desert, and especially our visit to the “Village d’antan” where we spoke extensively with a creator of exquisite santons. We never could have had this opportunity of meeting with locals without Isabelle’s introduction. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
