What to do and see in Montezuma, Province of Puntarenas: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

May 30, 2021 Janean Rudisill

North of Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Preserve and south of Tambor Bay, along a forested sandy bay, Montezuma has numerous beaches, waterfalls, good fishing, seafood, surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, hiking, and bicycling. Playa Las Manchas is popular for snorkeling, though you need to be mindful of riptides as you gaze at the parrotfish, rays, puffers, and needlefish. The kids will like exploring the colorful rocks and tide pools at Playa Rocas. Beachfront cantinas, bars, and restaurants are plentiful in Montezuma. Playa de los Artistas on the Montezuma beachfront serves sushi, pizza, and vegetarian dishes by lantern light at driftwood tables on smooth sand floors beneath bamboo lattice ceilings. Playa Montezuma hosts the fishing fleet. Hike half an hour to the endless sands of Playa Grande to swim, surf, boogie board, or sunbathe nude where the waves are big and the currents less strong. Horseback ride, bike, or hike the beachfront path north towards Playa Cocolito, where El Chorro waterfall tumbles into the rocky ocean. Follow the river upstream from the beach to find more waterfalls for swimming. Playa Los Cedros, a small scenic beach flanked by a waterfall and large banyan tree near Cabuya, has a right-handed point break favored by experienced surfers when the south swells get going good. The beaches and tropical forests at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Preserve are protected as a national park. Surf at nearby Mal Pais, Playa Santa Teresa, or Playa Carmen. Surf camps can teach you the basics.

I came alone on a yoga package with Montezuma after corresponding with Dagmar and the experience exceeded my expectations and I now highly recommend it to anyone. It was by far one of my best yoga experiences as besides meeting all the needs from experienced yoga teachers as far as Assanas, Dagmar and Eva are true yogis by spirit and their classes and wisdom are on what made their daily classes so memorable. I will be certain to come back and the cherry on top is that you get to do yoga in beautiful surroundings in open sir in one of the blue zones of the World (where many centennials live) overlooking the beautiful Ocean. I miss it already and can’t wait to come back soon!

La Selva Cerveza Artesanal

La Selva Cerveza Artesanal is a craft brewery in the midst of the jungles of Costa Rica, residing by Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve, the first in the country, from which we use the water to brew 6 different ales, embodying an alternative lifestyle which we call a “living ale”. We offer brewery tours, a tasting room, and a tapas restaurant onsite.

We were on our way back to Montezuma from a hot & sweaty 6 mile hike in Cabo Blanco and saw the signs for cold beer & tapas. We followed them down the dirt road and - behold! - beer heaven! La Selva makes some of the best craft beer that we had in Costa Rica. Across four of us, we tried seven of their beers and also their amazing sparkling lemonade (it's in the bottle in the case - I regretted not buying more bottles of it to take back to our hotel). Their beers range from light to dark and every one that we tried was quite good. The tapas were also delicious - we tried the hummus, the nachos (pillowy fried dough bites) and the yucca fries (our favorite). It's a nice setting with mostly outdoor seating, from comfy couches to overturned oil drums as seats with cross sections of trees for tables. The owner wasn't particularly friendly but no matter. It was still a great experience and I'd definitely recommend it, especially after a visit to the Isla de Cabuya or Cabo Blanco.
