Montevideo, a port city and the capital of Uruguay, is a perfect destination for travelers looking for a relaxing stroll past colonial era buildings and along beautiful beaches. The Ciudadela Gateway, the only remaining section of the wall that once surrounded the entire city, now serves as the entrance to Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's oldest neighborhood. Home to churches, museums, and theaters, at night the area comes alive with nightclubs playing Tango and Candombe music for crowds of dancers.

We observed this beautiful statue when waking around Montevideo. This is an excellent sculpture of an equestrian figure of a gaucho soldier carrying a spear in his right hand. The monument, cast in bronze, sits on a granite base and was erected in 1927.

Uruguay’s greatest hero and the man most associated with its independence is buried beneath a monumental statue of Artigas on horseback. It is located in, fittingly enough, Independence Square. It opened in 1977. The mausoleum can be accessed. Guards stand watch at the tomb. He died In Paraguay in 1855 but his remains were repatriated to his beloved Uruguay five years later.

This is a beautiful sculpture in a very nice park. We stopped here on our bus tour of the city. There was also a nice selection of vendors selling "tourist" goods. Nice photo stop.

Set in the beautiful Park, this sculpture is simply wonderful with very intricate work. It captures the toils and difficulties of early settlers perfectly. A lovely sculpture to sit and marvel at, and when you finish there are vendors selling local crafts nearby...

This small monument, sits just in the street, in downtown Montevideo. The origin of this singer was (and still is for some) dubious, as he was born in Tacuarembó (Small town in Uruguay), but also has french paper, due to his mother origin. He was the one who changed the way Tango was sung decades ago, is still present in several radio programs as of today. To add to the legend, he dies in a plane crash in 1925 near Medellín Colombia, when he was still very young. Besides the monument, you will also see small grid with hundreds of padlocks, that are left there by visitors and also locals, justo make their visit inmortal!

This unusual holocaust memorial is situated on the sea shore. It is made of pink granite, with a window overlooking the sea. There are railroad tracks at the approach which symbolize Auschwitz, an uneven wall, and quotes from esteemed Jews. The memorial is very though provoking and you are left to contemplate, peacefully, what was intended.
