What to do and see in Montego Bay, Saint James Parish: The Best Things to do

July 8, 2021 Augustus Redeker

While this Jamaican spring break favorite is great for party animals, it can also be surprisingly low key – if you want. Montego Bay has excellent duty-free shopping, vibrant nightlife, and calm waters. Browse the local handicrafts at the open-air Harbour Street market, or the "hip strip" shops of Gloucester Avenue. The underwater crevices of Widowmaker’s Cave offer an intricate diving experience. Float serenely down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft and let your troubles melt away under the sun.

We visited the garden/gallery and were so happy we did! It offers a beautiful and lush respite from the touristy Montego Bay hip strip. Ras greeted us and gave a brief history of the home/garden/museum and interesting experience of building on the steep hillside/cliff while a hummingbird landed in my hand to feed from the feeder. The guide was very informative and pleasant. It rained while we were there which seemed only to enhance the experience...they provided us with umbrellas.

Greenwood Great House

Built during an era of elegance and brutality, Greenwood has retained the atmosphere of the 19th century and continues to capture the imagination of its visitors. The house was built by the Barretts of Wimpole Street London in 1800. Unique among local plantation houses, Greenwood survived unscathed during the slave rebellion of Christmas 1831. It still has most of its original furniture including the largest and rarest collection of musical instruments and books in the island.

Rose Hall Great House

The greatest of Jamaican great houses, the Rose Hall Great House has a story with all the elements of an engaging novel. Built in 1770 by John Palmer and his wife, it eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annee, a beautiful but feisty English girl. Little did John know that his young wife possessed “black magic” powers that would eventually lead to his demise. During her reign as mistress of the plantation, Annee did away with two more husbands and countless lovers. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annee passing through the Great House. A candle-lit evening tour of the Rose Hall Great House is a must for visitors to Montego Bay. Your guided exploration of the former home of Jamaica’s White Witch, Annee Palmer, includes captivating and chilling stories of love, murder and mystery skillfully told by knowledgeable guides. You’re sure to feel goose bumps as these eerie tales come to life in this grand estate, where ghost sightings have been reported over the years. Tours also give historic insight into this grandest of Jamaican great houses, now beautifully restored with 18th-century decor and antiques. To conclude this fascinating adventure, you can visit the dungeon, now transformed into a tavern called Annee’s Pub. Many visitors find that the famous rum cocktail, known as “Witches Brew” helps banish the spirits of ghosts or black magic they sense still lingering in the mansion.

Croydon Plantation

I toured the wonderful Croydon Plantation because of my love for coffee. It was one of the Carnival Cruise approved excursions. I took this particular tour while on a Caribbean Cruise with Carnival Dream in July 2014 with friends. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly Along the way she answered questions and pointed out beautiful plants, vegetation, and crops indigenous to the island. We were treated to fresh fruit grown on the plantation midway through the tour. I thought this was a particularly nice touch. But the highlight was at the end of the tour which is when we were served Jerk Chicken with island greens and a bottled water. I had an opportunity to sample freshly brewed coffee, a product of the plantation. It had a delicate distinction. Delicious! I was thrilled. There is also coffee for sale. Coffee makes a great gift from Jamaica. I highly recommend it!

And watching all the planes come in to the airport almost right over our heads was awesome. Beach was nice and clean. Waves were high and the ocean was rough most of days we were there so we were not able to swim much as it was red flagged alot.

Doctor's Cave Beach

Five miles of pure white sand and crystal clear water have made this beach a popular destination for tourists and families.

Reviewed By TOTRVLER

This was a favourite beach in Mo Bay, it was US$6 entrance and they can stamp your hand for re-entrance if you go out say for lunch and come back, if you want an umbrella or chairs it was another US$6 each, the attendants were helpful and the beach itself was soft white sand and blue waters. It gets very deep fast so you will have to be careful not to go out too far if you cant swim but the water was nice and calm. There are many lifeguards around and restaurants right by the beach, attendants can get drinks for you for a price. If the cruise ships are there it gets a bit crowded so go early to get a chair etc but it is still quite enjoyable and picturesque. We went twice since we loved this beach so much!!!
