We drove from Philipsburg to Hamilton over the pass and stopped at Gem Mountain for their opening day for 2020. First time there and found it to be a great experience, a lot of fun and very relaxing. The staff there could not have been friendlier and more helpful. Every bucket is guaranteed to have some sapphires in them and its a lot of fun searching them out. They have staff in the store that will go through your finds and explain what you have and what they are worth. No pressure to spend any extra money getting them cut and heat treated but they do offer the service. All and all a great experience and would highly recommend it if you're driving in the area.

The Four Cees (Color, Carat, Cut & Clarity) are all to be found at MBJM and Bruce, Nina, And Eric graciously taught me the mining basics and provided a nice tour of their operation and explained a lot about sapphire mining on the Missouri River. Quite an experience and so exciting when you find your gems. Be prepared (hat, water, snack, and perhaps rubber gloves), but they provide everything else. It is an authentic outdoors setting at an operating sapphire mine and you will need to work if you want to find them.

Heading to Nevada city we passed the red rock mine and decided to give it a go. Was great fun, we went for the big bucket for $20 and it kept 3 of us interested for a good hr. some nice jewellery to be purchased at the stall too, one to recommend if you have an hr to spare.

The main street in the downtown business district, which takes its name from the four prospectors who discovered gold there in 1864.
This is a beautiful walking mall complete with sculptures and a little stream down the center of it The old buildings were put up for sale for $2 each and low interest funding was made available to refurbish these buildings. That was in the 1980's. We almost bought the Atlas Building (check it out as it has been wonderfully restored). Alas, we were transferred to Denver. Explore this area and I hope you enjoy it very much. It is the only one I have seen where they went to great lengths to preserve the history and the buildings rather than tear it all down and build new stuff. Hats off to the City Fathers of Helena

This place is an awesome and unique sight! Must see in Butte. The thing is massive. Worth the $3 fee. Check it out. Trust me. It’s worth it! Pair it with the Mining museum for a full understanding of the importance of mining in Butte’s history.
