The archaeological site CRIPTA ROMANICA is an extraordinary place: 4,500 years of history can be touched within its walls! Romanesque sculpural remains, Gothic artworks, and Renaissance beauties can all be admired as well as ancient tombs and greek pottery. The apse of the Romanesque crypt built in the 12th century is still there to tell us the fascinating story of Bishop Romualdo's temple destroyed in 1742.
We can really recommend taking the guided tour. The place is an excavation under the town cathedral showing remains of previous buildings and times. It is like a small museum with on site findings on display. The local guide did an excellent job telling the fascinating story in perfect English. The place is small and without a guide we would have missed most of it including a secret room only found 4 years ago...

The church of San Salvatore, one of the oldest church of Monopoli city, is located inside the ancient city walls and overlooking the sea. Folk tradition says that the church was built by a captain of a pirate ship who escaped with his crew on a shipwreck and, for this reason, the church is facing on the sea and is dedicated to “San Salvatore”. The Church of “San Salvatore in Pittagio Pinnae” (pittachion means board where it was written the name of the quarter) has an history that begins in the early Christian age (3rd – 4th century).

My friends and i were completely charmed by this lovely little town by the sea. The historic center is darling - so much white stone everywhere; old buildings, restaurants and twinkly lights. Good shopping in the area too. I'll be back!
