What to do and see in Mongolia, Mongolia: The Best Things to do

January 25, 2022 Claudia Navarrete

Mongolia /mɒŋˈɡoʊliə/ ( listen) (Monggol Ulus in Mongolian; Монгол Улс in Mongolian Cyrillic) is a landlocked unitary sovereign state in East Asia. Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, and that term is sometimes used to refer to the current state. It is sandwiched between China to the south and Russia to the north. Mongolia does not share a border with Kazakhstan, although only 37 kilometres (23 mi) separates them.

Hustai National Park

This national park is a protected area for the Przewalski’s horses that face the threat of extinction. It is approximately 2-3 hours (subject to traffic conditions) drive from Ulaanbaatar city. We reached here in the evening and the weather was cool with fresh air. We spotted many of the wild horses walking around the hillsides. Przewalski’s horses are really very beautiful animals with light brown colour on the flank and yellowish-white on the belly, muzzle and near the horseshoes. We also were able to see some wild deers silhouettes on top of the hill. The sunset at the hillside was mesmerising too! It was a fascinating and unforgettable time! A must especially for animal and nature lovers!

We travelled through the Gobi Desert on a 6 day private tour of Mongolia. It was such an amazing place to experience! We visited during winter, and there was so much snow in different part of the desert that it just added to the amazement of this destination. Each night we stayed with a different family in a traditional ger. Visiting the Gobi Desert has been a highlight of my travels around our amazing and diverse world!

Very much worth a look. Next to the Palace. 8000 MNT entry fee. 10,000 MNT if you want to take photos. Admittedly I just took photos anyway, discreetly. Lots to see and well laid out into different sections.

Genghis Khan Statue Complex

Chinggis Khaan Statute complex is situated 54 km from Ulaanbaatar City, with the view of beautiful natural scenery on the bank of the Tuul River, a historical place where Chinggis khan’s golden whip was found. Today, for a memory of the man of the millennium, a 40 meters high stainless steel statue of Chinggis Khaan on a horseback is the largest among the statues in the world. Inside the statue we operate a restaurant, souvenir shop, two museums and conference hall. Visitors can go up the statue using the elevator or the stairs to the head of the horse where they can have a panoramic view of the beautiful landscape.

We observed many statues in Mongolia, many of Genghis Khan and our guide from Juulchin Tours said they are very popular and more are built every year. This one is certainly impressive - massive on a hillside- glinting in the sun. It really dominates the landscape. We walked up the broken steps to the statue entrance and into a huge lobby with a striking enormous leather Mongolian boot. We went to the basement to look through exhibits of the evolution of gers from ancient times to now and the role of prized large Mongolian dogs - especially in the north to scare off wolves in winter. Then we watched an old video made before the statue was finally completed. Next it was up in a lift to the third floor and walk up narrow stairs before reaching the final steps to the top of the horse's head and a fantastic view across the landscape. Our guide took us there about 10.00am on a sunny autumn morning before the bus loads of tourists arrive and queues develop.

Mongolian State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet

Reviewed By dnaleciz - Moreno Valley, United States

Directly across the street from Sukhbaaar Square, one will observe a stunning pink and white building with columns in the front. This is the Mongolian State Academic of Theatre of Opera and Ballet. It was established on 15 May 1963 under the direction of the Central Committee of Mongolian Public Revolution Party. Its purpose was to "bring culture to the Mongolian people". Over the years the repertoire of the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has expanded to more than 100 national and world classical works including 56 ballets (as well as several Mongolian ballets) and 54 operas. At present the theatre employees 270 artists, staff and administrators. On 23 November 2019, I was able to obtain a ticket for that night opera, "Madam Butterfly". Madam Butterfly is an opera set in 1904 Japan, has three acts with 34 arias, duets, trios, choruses, etc. I must admit that opera and ballet are not in my repertoire of exciting things to do. The young lady at the Tourist Information Center encouraged me to attend and I was very hesitant about this venue. After seeing the performance, I glad that I had the opportunity to see a world class performance. The music, customs, and performance was outstanding. Well worth the T 68,000 ($25.00 US) ticket price. The acoustic in the theater are top notch and every seat provides an excellent view of the stage. I'm still not an opera fan but I would highly encourage everyone to visit to this Theater while in Mongolia if possible. It is a remarkable experience.

Genghis Khan Square

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

Staying at a nearby hotel I don't know how many times I crossed this square, which definitely marks the center of Ulaanbaatar. Talking about it, one hears two different names for it: Genghis Khan Square or Sükhbaatar Square (which should be the official name again since 2016). Often the flagstone covered place is quite empty, just some individuals crossing it from one side to the other, but there are also some people, who sit down on one of the benches between flowerbeds, which surround the equestrian bronze statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, the 'Father of the Mongolian Revolution', who died at age 30 in 1923. Action, like wedding ceremonies, can sometimes be seen on the square's north side, in front of the Government Palace's colonnade with the statue of Ghengis Khan in the center, flanked by the one's of his successors Ögedei Khan and Kublai Khan. Interesting on the eastern side of th square are the Central Cultural Palace, the State Ballet and Opera House and the Central Tower skyscraper. Some buildings are traditional, some completely modern like the sail shaped Blue Sky Tower on the south side. On the west are the Central Post Office and the Stock Exchange building among others. At night everything is attractively lit up.

Bogd Khaan Palace Museum of Mongolia

Reviewed By dnaleciz - Moreno Valley, United States

Located in the southern section of Ulaanbaatar city is the Bogd Khaan Palace Museum (or Winter Palace). This a definitely must visit site. This particular museum is a considerable distance from the center of the city and can be reached by public bus, taxi or on foot (approximately 1 hour walk during the winter). The complex was built between 1893 and 1903 as the Winter home of the Mongolian leader. In 1926, several years after the death of the last Mongolian Khan, the government decided to convert the remaining property of the Bogd khaan into a public museum. It was converted to a museum, displaying objects of historical and artistic value, religious idols, the royal collection of stuffed animals, and other items which had been owned or used by the Bogd Khaan and his family.. Today the Bogd Khaan Palace Museum consists of seven Summer Prayer temples and the Winter palace, which was built in European style and later modified to reflect Buddhist ideals.. It is the oldest museum in Mongolia and it contains the biggest historical collection in the country. The Khaan at one time had four residences throughout Mongolia and this is the only one to have survived. This complex is one of the few historical attractions in Mongolia which was not destroyed or closed down by the Soviets or the Communist rulers during their occupation of the country from 1921 to 1986. Within the grounds of the Winter Palace one will find the Gate of Peace and Happiness, the Cooling Pavilion as well as 6 significantly beautiful temples, each containing Buddhist artwork, scripture and thangka., The palace complex consists of a total of 19 to 20 structures each displaying various items. The museum has 8,600 plus items on display. On display are many of the Bogd Khan's possessions, such as his throne and bed, his collection of art and stuffed animals, his ornate ceremonial ger, a pair of ceremonial boots, and also a regalia worn by the Bogd Khan's pet elephant. The green roof buildings are amazing and each building gives a look into the royal way of life. Life was good if you were the Khaan or part of the royal family. Excellent museum and I strongly recommend spending 3-4 hour at this museum taking in the sights and learning about Mongolian royal life. Winter hours of operation:: 1000 - 1700 Monday - Friday / Summer hours of operation: 0900 - 2000 Everyday. Entry fees: Adults: T 8,000 ($2.92 US) / Students: T 3,000 ($1.09) / Children: T 1,500 ($0.54) / Camera fee: T 50,000 ($18.28) / Video fee: T 70,000 ($25.59)
