Mombasa, with a population of 900,000, is no sleepy seaside village. Its beachfront hotels appeal to travelers in search of sun, sand and surf, while its Arab, Indian and colonial European heritage makes for a wide variety of sights to see. Can't find a taxi? We took a 10 day trek through Tsavo East, Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru and Maasai Mara. Joseph was the driver. The trip was good, we saw a lot of animals including the migration crossing the Mara River. Probably would have been a better safari with a different guide. Good facilities and Jennifer was First Class setting the entire trip up.

In June, 2019 I sent emails to eight different Mombasa safari tour companies. Not only was Faith Chebet of Kenya Tru Nomads Tours the first to respond, her email answered the three basic questions in my initial email. Several of the other tour operators never responded and the others responded with basically a generic email that required me to then send them another one with my same basic questions. After I finally received pricing information from the other ones, and Faith sent that to me right away, I was able to compare. I liked how complete and detailed Faith’s quotes were (and she also helped me narrow down which park made the most sense given our constrained time frame), and decided to book our overnight safari with Kenya Tru Nomads for when our cruise ship was going to be docked for two days in Mombasa in November, 2020. Via CruiseCritic I ended up getting 25 other cruise passengers that were interested in doing the overnight safari. Faith communicated very efficiently and quickly with me and we all paid our minimal deposit via PesaPal (Africa’s version of PayPal, I think). I continued to email Faith because passengers would come up with different questions that they needed answered. Faith always responded quickly and thoroughly. Fast forward to March and April, 2020 and many passengers decided to cancel the cruise because of the coronavirus concerns. I was sending Faith many cancellation emails and I was hearing back from the passengers that they were getting their deposits refunded within a week. Finally, in mid-May, 2020 the cruise was canceled because of COVID-19 and the rest of us had to request our deposits be refunded. Once again, all of them were refunded to us, without issues or hassle, within one week. I am so sad that I will not be able to go on the safari in Mombasa. If the safari itself was anything like Faith‘s communication skills and thoroughness, we are going to miss a wonderful tour. So, I can’t actually review the tour, but as someone who has put many small group tours together for cruise ship passengers, Faith was a pleasure to work with and the most professional tour company person I ever dealt with. I am very sorry that I will not get to actually meet her or Kenya Tru Nomads employees in November and I am praying that the people and economy of Mombasa are able to withstand COVID-19.

This tour gives guests a chance to visit the Tsavo East National Park from the coast region and enjoy the view of great wildlife for one night. Tsavo East is known for the red elephants and big 5 in the park such as the lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and buffalos, etc.

Mombasa is the oldest city (but the second largest city) in Kenya. It offers intrepid travelers a heady cocktail of fun, comprising of a cosmopolitan city, a major African port, ancient history, culinary delights, crazy party scene (locals call it “Mombasa Raha” – Swahili for “Mombasa Fun” or “Joy”), diverse cultures, great weather, fabulous beaches. Mombasa is reknown for its remarkable pearly white sandy beaches, historical sites, ancient architecture, dolphin sporting trips, deep sea fishing, snorkeling and is also the largest port in Eastern and Central Africa. It is said to be founded in 900 AD. For context, this is the same century when: Charlemagne the Great was crowned Emperor of the West by Pope Leo III; Algebra was invented; the Danish Vikings sacked London; and Viking chieftain, Rurik, led raids on Northern Russia and founded the first significant dynasty in Russian history called the Rurik Dynasty.

What makes Amboseli special to us is that it is a game viewing paradise. . . Guaranteed elephant sightings come alongside other incredible wildlife sightings. Its compact size allows you to see virtually every aspect in about 3 days. In addition, Amboseli offers the best views of the world's tallest free-standing mountain and Africa's highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro! Amboseli National Park is situated at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is the lifeline of the Park, through its melting snow which flows into underground springs that feed the swamps and wetlands that dot the plains. These water sources attract animals of all size, the most sought-after being the free-roaming elephants, but you will also see elands, waterbucks, Grant's gazelles, warthogs, Coke's hartebeests, zebras and other grazing herbivores. The abundance of large prey supports lions, leopards, civets, wildcats and other elusive hunters, as well as jackals, hyenas and other scavengers.

Salt Lick Lodge is located in the heart of a private Wildlife Sanctuary which lies adjacent to Tsavo National Park, therefore playing an increasingly important role in the protection and conservation of Kenya's wildlife heritage. All rooms are built in two storey blocks from a central pod and linked together by elevated platforms overlooking a salt slick and small waterhole. Early morning and late afternoon game drives provide an ideal opportunity to view and photograph the diverse array of wildlife within the sanctuary. The water holes below provide a wonderful opportunity to view animals at close proximity in their habitat. The lobby and terraced bar offer excellent views and photographic opportunities, while an underground tunnel and bunker with ground level windows provides unbelievably close, yet safe access to variety of animals as they drink water. Night game drive provide guests with an opportunity of seeing animals not usually encountered on daytime game drive.

I was picked up at my hotel in Diani and taken to downtown Mombasa with other participants. The tour was excellent as guided by Mr Kombo who translated in both French and English. Mr Timothy Katana at Baobab resort was very knowledgeable about the tours offered and he booked for me the tour guided by Mr Kombo. It was an awesome birthday gift. I am truly indebted to this two men. Highly recommended. Tim New York, USA
