What to do and see in Modena, Emilia-Romagna: The Best Walking Tours

December 1, 2021 Nicolette Lion

Known for its medieval history, its auto-making prowess (as home base of both Ferrari and Maserati) and its famous balsamic vinegar, Modena is a treat for visitors of all ages. The 12th-century Romanesque Cathedral of Modena, with its spectacular Ghirlandina bell tower (under restoration until the end of 2010), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just outside of town (and next to the car maker’s factory) in Maranello is Galleria Ferrari, dedicated to the brand and Italian motor racing industry.

Davide was an excellent tour guide for my group of friends on an early Saturday morning. It was obvious that he loved his job and it showed through the history he walked us through during the entire tour. I would highly recommend any tour with Davide and if the Vatican is on your bucket list, then early morning access is the tour you want. Happy travels!

A lovely lady called Gulia took my husband and I on a walk round Rome sampling food and drink from various shops and a superb pasta lunch. If you are going todo this tour I advise you not to eat much beforehand as we finished the tour around 2:00pm and did not eat another thing all day. We had meats and cheese with some wine to start off with and then followed this in a picturesque market square with tasting various oils and vinegars. Roman Pizza and beer were next, followed by a delicious lunch of two different types of pasta. Then followed dessert of either cannoli or tirimisu at another stop off point, ice cream and coffee to finish. Never felt so full. Guila was full of interesting conversation about her city. All in all a great day out ending at the Trevi fountain.

This was our second tour with Taste of Bologna, having done the Pizza and Gelato tour on a previous visit, this time our daughter joined us and once again we had Sara to guide us through the food and history of Bologna. We started with an interesting Expresso, you need to do the tour to find out more, then through one of the mercado's, then to the best pasta shop in Bologna, we did it on our last tour and I went at 08.30 the morning before the tour to buy some before they ran out! We tried to make tortellini with mixed success , Sara bought fresh pasta and we were off to explore and then have some ragu, more exploring of the city then the bakers (wow) and then the collect our lunch to be enjoyed with a glass of vino, afterwards more exploring and gelato. We all had a fabulous time and learnt so much. Andrea was super helpful with answering question we had and providing restaurant recommendations all of which were really good

We've done a couple of cooking courses in Italy before. This one seemed quite cheap so we weren't expecting too much. However, we had a lovely time. Mum (with no English at all) just got on with her usual food preparation for a normal fresh pasta meal. Her son translated (our Italian is embarrassingly bad) and got in her way so she occasionally grabbed the kitchen utensil or pushed him aside like Mums do! Dad and the dog sat next to us watching telly. It really felt like we were involved in a normal family day. We got lots of hands-on experience rolling pasta and trying to make Tortelloni. Then we all sat down together to eat. Charming experience. We really enjoyed it. Be warned, their lovely house is in the middle of nowhere so take a taxi.
