Absolutely gorgeous. The weather is very variable and changes quickly - the first day we went (parking at the main parking lot) had a sunny forecast but when we got there the entire mountain top was covered in thick fog and it was pouring rain so we couldn't see it at all. It was also very windy and approaching freezing in October. The next day we hiked over from the Zao Onsen Ropeway and the weather was perfect although still jacket weather. Very glad we made the second attempt because it's fantastic - the unreal color of the lake along with the alien landscape.
One of Japan's three major valleys, along with Geibikei in Iwate Prefecture and Yabakei in Oita Prefecture. Okumatsushima Peninsula protruding from the southeastern tip of Miyadojima, about 2 km from Murohama to Kayanozaki. In contrast to the feminine landscape of Matsushima Bay, the masculine panorama is a series of surprises and excitement.
