This is a fantastic place for viewing Kawazu-zakura type of cherry trees in Shimogamo hot springs area of Minami-Izu town, about 20 minutes by bus from Izukyu Shimoda Station at the very southern tip of Izu Peninsula. Visitors may buy the 2-days hop-on hop-off bus coupon available at the tourist information center at Izukyu Shimoda Station (it will save a couple of coins than paying for the normal bus fare). The cherry trees along the river embankment continue for about two kilometers on both sides. A day hot springs facility Gin no Yu Kaikan operated by the local town community is at the half-way point. I visited on February 27, 2019, and it was just slightly off-peak, but still in best view time.

As the nanohana (rape blossoms) and early-blooming Minamino kawazu-sakura cherries open, this festival is held from early February through March in Minami-izu. Rows of cherry blossoms span 4.2Km along the banks of the Aono River, with nearly 800 trees in a rich and vivid pink. Beneath them are the fallen rape blossoms, creating a carpet of yellow and a colorful world of spring. At night, the cherry blossoms are illuminated, and cherry blossom tea is offered, with sweet sake and other refreshments also for sale. Local delicacies are also sold, a marathon event is put on, andf much more.
