Known as the "Island of Colors" thanks to its jewel-colored waters and building painted in vivid primary tones, the horseshoe-shaped island of Milos floats serenely in the Aegean Sea. It was here that the world-famous Venus de Milo statue was discovered. Though she now holds court at the Louvre, Milos has other beauties to admire. There are dozens of beaches, all different colors and all different combinations of sand, stone and shell. Explore the ancient theater, catacombs and windmills in Tripiti village, then cap off your day with a cinematic sunset.

When the guide says we are going to a mining museum, the expectations start out low. This place was well organized and had interesting and engaging exhibits. The geology of this island is surprisingly diverse leading to it being a major source of minerals from prehistoric times to the present. Particularly heart wrenching is the plight of the island sulfur miners, who eventually worked with no pay in a futile effort to keep the mine going. Hands-on exhibits where you can touch the various minerals such as kaolin are a nice feature.

An intriguing studio where creative photographer Dimitris Tsirigotis exhibits his artistic work. Experimenting with light and colors, he applies long exposure technigues to create unigue images.

The Folk Museum of Milos is open since 1967 and is run by the Melian Association in Athens. The characteristic of the museum is that the visitor is not seeing an exhibition of old things, but he’s visiting a home, where every object is at its place.

More than 3000 years all collected in two rooms. For a truly comprehensive understanding of the island, you must visit the archaeological museum. It has a replica of the Aphrodite of Milos, the world famous statue taken from Milos and now in the Louvre.
