Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

Founded in 1701, Ste Anne's is one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the country. This 1886 building is their 8th church. It's a beautiful Gothic Revival building to admire from outside; enjoy the spires against the sky and be sure to look closely at the building for the gargoyles and some original stones from the previous church. Inside is just as beautiful with the tall ceilings and columns and stained glass windows featuring the names of early Detroit families. Don't forget the Gabriel Richard Chapel (which is used for services too); Fr. Richard is buried beneath. During the summer, they celebrate the parish's history with a week of novenas, including one dedicated to the French founders of the parish. Today the parish is primary Latino so there are masses in Spanish. Access to the church is limited during these COVID times, so check their website for Mass times.

Wow! This is an amazing place. So much in support of the crucifix. Allow time to walk and pray the Canticle trail (St. Francis prayer), to pray in the various shrines, or walk the Stations. The grounds are beautiful and a tribute to Our Father. Our schedule didn't line up for mass, however, plan that if you can. The gift shop rivals the one at our local diocese! A great resource for prayer books, gifts, statues and more. Worth the stop!
