Volcano walk it said in the itinerary - so we left our lodge to get started, briefing began and we learned we were going on a HIKE !!! well, the furthest myself and my husband walk is to the pub and back...... anyhow, we enlisted porters ( who were absolutely a godsend at $15 each) to carry our rucksacks and set off up the volcano, so far so good, minimal elevation and then a couple of hours in, passing much beautiful scenery and wildlife including chameleons and gigantic worms the legs started feeling the climb, luckily our guide was fabulous as he let us go at our own pace and eventually, 4 hours later we got to the top to see the crater lake - the pain was so worth it, the clouds, rainforest and views of the other volcano peaks was spectacular.....and then the long walk back down - totally recommend

Having seen the lake from far off while birdwatching in nearby Mgahinga N.P I was interested in the place as a birding spot. Unfortunately I could only manage a short drive by visit , a bit late in the day for the best birdwatching. However, the moment I stepped out of the car at the waterside eco-resort two Otters popped their heads out of the water right in front of the terrace/pier. An African Marsh Harrier flew over and various Kingfishers and reed/papyrus inhabiting warblers and weaver birds abounded. Lovely spot and probably worth staying the night to catch the late evening/early morning activity, perhaps a boat ride would be fun too. Would love to visit again.
