To be totally honest, we are not country music fans. No knowledge, no interest. After years of staying on the highway and bypassing Merritt we thought we would do a little exploring. We visited the info centre and picked up a map detailing the murals and stars. Not being familiar with the artists, we chose a couple of the big name crossover entertainers. The murals were very well done and the stars with the singers handprint and signature mounted on wooden stands were a terrific idea.

My sister and I were looking for a geocache that was hidden on the hill outfside the cemetery. After we found it, we decided to explore the cemetery and gained an interesting history lesson about Merritt. We noticed that the well-maintained grounds had gravel in some parts and grassy areas in others. A large, bee-hive shaped monument, made of stones inlaid in cement, sat at the entrance. It was surrounded by lush green plants and colorful flowers. We observed that older graves were located in the gravel and had upright headstones. The newer section was all lawn and had flat headstones flush with the ground. Owned and operated by the city of Merritt, this cemetery offers in-ground burial for both caskets and cremated remains. Trees and benches dot the interior.

As my sister and I geocached in the city of Merritt, we visited Trinity United Church. We read that the church was destroyed by fire in 2019 and was rebuild through fund-raising efforts. Services were cancelled so we could not go inside but we walked around the building, looking at its white siding, bell tower, brown roof and steeple. Building of the original, old church was started in 1908 by Presbyterians and completed in 1910. The land on which it sits was purchased for $400. Parking is available for your vehicle while you explore this landmark.
