Large playground, inspired by a nature theme, in Royal Park next to the Royal Children's Hospital. Park is connected to other parts of the park by walkways. The play equipment is large and sturdy- the kids love exploring and climbing. The surrounding gardens are also lovely. Great place to stop for a picnic or BBQ if visiting the RCH. I particularly liked the area where you could build a shelter from branches....the kids loved sitting inside and hiding away. Parking nearby has strict time limits- and the inspectors check so make sure you pay for more time than you think you'll need. There are lots of food venues inside the RCH if you get there and decide to make it a picnic (Subway, noodles, Maccas, coffee shops etc). I was really impressed with this playground. Only downside- very little shade/ undercover area.... wear sunscreen and bring a hat!

I have been here a handful of times now, and the only reason I don't go often is because my wallet won't allow it! Think of it as one part museum, one part garden centre, and one part gift shop. It's a grouping of several stores, including Collector's Corner - which houses some of the biggest crystals and geodes I have ever seen! They sell pretty much every type of rock and gemstone in existence, and range in price from a dollar or 2 to over 20,000 dollars! Collector's Corner also has a FANTASTIC range of plants - hoyas, cactus, succulents, ferns, etc. They have quite a few hard to find plants as well! At the other end of the complex is a very large nursery, which has just about any fruit tree you can imagine, roses, hedging, tubestock, veggie and fruit seedlings, landscaping trees, pots, etc. In between these 2 incredible stores, there is also a water feature store that specialises in fountains and ponds. I haven't made it in this one yet, but from the door it seems like a treasure trove of garden trinkets, windchimes, pots, gnomes and lawn figurines, water fountains, anything to make your yard beautiful! This complex also has a cafe on site but we've never actually been in it. Too hard to pull ourselves away from all the treasure! Should you go there? The short answer is, if you don't mind being broke after leaving, then YES! We will go again (and again) whenever our wallet allows!

The Capital City Trail is a dual-use cycle and pedestrian trail. Getting around it would be an awfully long walk, so most people prefer to cycle. The Yarra Bend park is a good place to start. The Capital City Trail also connects to other trails, such the Yarra trail heading into the city and the Merri Creek path. The whole Capital City Trail is around 30 km (19 miles) so it would take you around a day going at a steady pace. Water fountains are located around every 2 kms (one mile).

Fitzroy Gardens is one of Melbourne’s most historic and beautiful Gardens. Originally set aside as a reserve in 1848, the layout follows a classic Victorian–era design, featuring pathways lined with magnificent Elm trees, and a variety of flowers, ornamental shrubs and trees which together with extensive lawns create a diverse and layered landscape. Points of interest include the magnificent floral displays in the Spanish mission style Conservatory. Cooks Cottage, a scarred tree, the Fairies’ Tree and model tudor village, sculptures, fountains and a stormwater cleaning and re-use system. The Fitzroy Gardens visitor centre provides tourism information and entry tickets to Cooks Cottage. A free guided walking tour departs from the visitor centre every Saturday at 10am. Refreshments are available from KereKere cafe at the visitor centre.
Good town planning in Victorian times resulted in several gardens and parks being included in the layout of Melbourne and they were shaped according to the ideas of the time - with lawns, big trees, flowerbeds, ponds, fountains, tree-lined pathways, sculptures and sometimes a few buildings, such as the Conservatory or Cook's Cottage (brought from England) in the Fitzroy Gardens. More recently have been added a café and a tourist information centre. Patient visitors will have the chance to observe wildlife in these parks, mainly different kind of birds or bats at night. In any case all this greenery in the middle of Melbourne makes for nice, relaxing breaks, when wandering through its streets and alleys.

The Yarra River’s journey begins on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and twists through the forested valleys of the Yarra Ranges and its quaint regional towns before concluding its journey on the muddy flats of Port Phillip Bay. Elemental to Melbourne’s identity, the Yarra River is one of Victoria’s iconic waterways. It has spiritual and cultural significance for Aboriginal communities. To the Wurundjeri people the river, known as Birrarung, was the life source and an important meeting place. And, to many locals, where happy memories of personal pilgrimages, peaceful summer evenings, and days exploring were made. Board one of the river cruises from Southbank to explore the lower reaches of the Yarra, follow the Capital City Trail on foot or bike, canoe or kayak all or part of its 240-kilometre expanse, or set up for a scenic sunset barbecue or picnic on the banks of the river.
This is a great riverside area , restaurants , bars areas to sit and watch the boats on the river or just have a nice walk .

Dandenong Ranges National Park is a rainforest getaway on Melbourne's doorstep. This is a place of tranquil forest walks, quaint hilltop towns and charismatic animals. Conquer the famous 1000 Steps, discover Olinda Falls and enjoy stunning views over Melbourne and the Yarra Valley. Here you'll find steep volcanic hills covered in stands of the world's tallest flowering tree, the Mountain Ash. Living among the greenery are wallabies, lyrebirds, wombats and the Powerful Owl. Please ensure you leave your dogs at home to avoid disturbing the local wildlife. Take an energetic walk up the 1000 Steps from Ferntree Gully Picnic Area and learn about its poignant association with Australia's Second World War veterans and the Kokoda Track Campaign.
Melbourne is often oppressively hot in summer but the Dandenongs are always several degrees cooler. The Dandenongs are a range of hills to the east of Melbourne, the Dandenongs are best known for its trees and ferns., in partiulcar the mountain ash, which are amongst the tallest flowering plants in the world. Puffing Billy is a narrow-guage steam railway, which will carry you through the hills at a leisurely pace. A well-known poem "Bannerman of the Dandenong" tells the story of an attempt to escape a bushfire, an ever-present danger during summer.

The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing. Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation. Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.
We had a wonderful time at the garden show in March. The Royal Exhibition Building is a most beautiful building and beautifully restored, situated in the Carlton Gardens, a gem of architectural design.

Victoria doesn't have the title 'The Garden State' for nothing! Stunning gardens all around the CBD and outer areas. Love that the city has green spaces throughout, particularly on the fringes....check out The Botanical gardens, Fitzroy Gardens and Carlton gardens for starters. The floral clock is cute and on the way to the Botanical gardens/ Shrine etc. Great spaces to have a relaxing stroll or to have your lunch!
