The Astor is one of the last single screen movie palaces left in the world, showing movies continuously since being built in 1936, and transporting you to a time when going to the movies was an event.
This place is incredible. I was brought here a month or two ago for the first time and have been back several times since, always keen to go again. The art deco styling of the place is awesome, it feels so grand and yet somehow still welcoming. This is probably due to the friendly and enthusiastic staff. On one occasion there was a build up of popcorn orders and the staff offered to bring the popcorn to us in the theatre (an extremely large theatre at that) instead of waiting at the counter. I love classic movies and its clear everyone at the Astor does too, the place is filled with old posters and nods to some of the best movies of all time. They regularly play classic and cult movies but also play new releases as well, often in 70mm film. If you want a grand cinema experience and to see a film the way it's truly intended to be seen then there's really no other place that comes close to the Astor. One of my absolute favourite places.

The Kino is in the Paris End of Collins Street, the screen menu appeals to those cinema goers who have mature tastes. We saw Six Minutes to Midnight with Judy Dench tonight, it's the best film I've seen in a long time. By the way, the Kino has a Bar, with a good range of drinks, including craft beer on tap. The Kino is very comfortable, and has accessible parking.

Tucked away in the back corner of Pinewood Shopping Centre is a small family owned and run cinema. Original 60's/70's decor with an old fashion service to match. Four of us went recently to watch Ford tv's Ferrari and it cost us a total of $28. Only $7 dollars a ticket, elsewhere it would have been $88 for the four of us. They sell beer and wine there, very limited range, but you cant take it in to the movie. There are tables and chairs to sit at. There is plenty of parking also and they give you a parking voucher for your car if the movie is going to be over the allowed 2 hours parking time. Also it's surrounded by some good cheap Asian restaurants to grab a meal at after the movie too. I'm a regular.

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas - the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre. Since that time Cinema Nova has grown to become one of the biggest and most popular independent cinemas in the world, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton's cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more movies than any other cinema. Cinema Nova was among the first cinemas in the country to screen stage productions from around the world, and our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up-close. From our famous house-made choc tops, to our curated wine and beer list in Nova Bar + Kitchen, you can combine your love of cinema with quality food and drink to make your visit a special occasion.
Cinema Nova is Melbourne's best Art House cinema. They have a great range of titles to see. Some are foreign language films and some are independent English language titles. They have discounts on Monday; you can get discounted parking. Its location in Carlton is convenient.

Moonlight Cinema is Australia’s favourite and largest outdoor cinema. Watch advance screenings, summer blockbusters and cult classics under the stars in Australia’s most iconic inner-city green spaces all summer long. For session times and movies showing, see the Moonlight Cinema website
A friend and I treated ourselves to a session of little women at the twilight cinema and were absolutely delighted. We packed snacks but there was also the option to buy food (vegan, vego, and meaty options) at the venue, and the venue is licensed so you can byo or buy alcohol there! I would recommend arriving an hour or so before the movie starts to proclaim a good spot, and make sure to rug up, even on warmer nights it is located in the middle of the botanic gardens with lots of tree coverage so it gets cold! You can bring low backed chairs but avoid it if you can as people with chairs have to sit either at the back or to the side. Another thing to note is that there is plenty of parking around the area but the best spots are snapped up about 1.5 hours before the movie starts. Also the venue is cash free so no need to stress about a stop off to the atm!
