This place is a hidden gem. People are very welcoming and kind. Before getting to this farm, we stopped by at one of the gas stations in Mecca. The staff and customers were so accommodating and helpful. We got lots of freshly baked goodies and local treats. After that, we headed to the Sulton Sea, which was a huge disappointment, and it is an understatement. On the way there and back, we had seen multiple dates farms which none of them we could go to. After googling for walk-in farms, the Bautista Family Organic Date Ranch popped in the search engine. We were hesitant to go, since we did not have a reservation. Plus, we do live in times of pandemic, not all the businesses are open for public use. The Bautista Family Organic Date Ranch was a safe and extremely friendly place to visit with the whole family. After a huge fiasco, it was nice to compensate out trip with this delicious stop/outing. In order for us to get in, we pressed the gate buttons. We were terrified to intrude, since we did not let them know about our visit. Immediately, we were welcomed by the staff and a variety of animals. Our kids enjoyed looking at goats, peacocks and cows. While the staff were packing our dates, we had a chance to explore the farm. A very nice employee gave us a tour and answered all our ridiculous questions. It kept our kids busy and gave us a break from driving. By the way, I should mention that the dates are so cheap! Seriously, what a bargain! My whole family had a chance to try all kinds of dates and chose what we liked. The boxes had multiple sections for a variety of dates for purchase. Which was great for us - we could not settle with one selection, too many choices :) In closing, my family will definitely recommend this farm to visit: it is safe, very informative, family friendly, and it has a good fresh organic product. Thank you so much!!!

I liked that church. They were friendly. The church was painted in yellow. The roof was red. People park on the street. There is a nice playground and a fountain. Worthwhile to see!

This is one of my top five all time hikes but the natural elements here at work continually change the challenge by changing the geography! Previous areas where ladders reached the top are now using ladders which shorter than I’ve ever seen and make the prospect of going back down them too daunting for me..... at the long climb, you have about a 3-4 foot gap from ladder top rung to the plateau and reversing would have you hanging very precariously seeking the top rung. Some ladders need replacement and if there was an organization to collect funds to maintain them, I’d gladly chip in to do that. Beautiful scenery, walking through the slots and then the Painted Canyon made this a great three hour hike for a couple of athletic senior citizens...... I hope to return and enjoy this hike for years to come!

What a beautiful drive! We'd come down Box Canyon Road many times in the past but had usually pulled out and driven south into the mountains to go hiking. This last September, we did the complete drive (after our hike). Usually we exit from the Highway 10 off ramp onto Cottonwood Springs Road heading south which turns back west. As mentioned, we usually do some hiking in the local mountains. This time, after the hike, we continued west through the canyon. If you're a hiker, geocacher, or have an ATV, this a great location to stop and get off the beaten path. The canyon is beautiful and the scenery is amazing. While I might not make this a primary destination site, this is well worth the visit if you are in the area. Don't forget your camera/phone for pictures!

Stopped for some ice cream! It's a great stop if you are out this way! The owner is very kind to young children and the mango banana ice cream was good!

Ok - so people seem to either love this place or hate it. We love nature and being outside. For us, the Salton Sea was very intriguing - it is resilient and still survives in spite of man's efforts. We felt that there is something very special about the place - read up on the history of how the sea started and the town built up around it (and later moved on). Take some time to check out the visitor center (restrooms here if you need) and talk with the rangers there - they have a wealth of information that they are happy to share. Entrance fee was $7 for our car. Get out of the car and walk a little bit - get away from the parking lots. It is an amazing window of life, death and rebirth unfolding underneath your footsteps. Go at a time of the bird migration and marvel at all the sounds and sights that this brings. Have enough gas in your car as it takes a while to get here (but the drive is pretty mellow). Be sure to bring plenty of water, some food and clothes (the weather can pick up out here before you know it), hat can be helpful from the sun. You can camp her if you want to spend more time. Check out the Sonny Bono National Wildlife refuge on the south side of the sea. Lots of people check out salvation mountain (and some venture into slab city) which is just a little bit away. Spend some time to enjoy and who knows you might join the group that loves the Salton Sea.
