You must visit Mavrovo Lake. Most beautiful nature with a lot of places for site seeing. It is good for your health and state of mind.

The beautiful setting of the Monastery and unusual architectural forms of the particular objects, that`s the strengths of this place. The visit inside does not make such a strong impression. Anyway, if you step in Mavrovo National Park, do not miss this historic monument.

the lake is massive (artificial and originally created for energy), very basic and empty at this time of the year. A good place to escape for some peace and quiet. (not if you go in the winter as its full during ski season apparently). don't look for five star anything!! 90 mins away from skopje airport. nice place to hike, mountain bike, (ski in the winter). Very cheap. 60 den. is 1 euro...and to put it into perspective, a cheeseburger is 90 den.!
people are really nice and friendly but not a lot of english knowledge...you might get more german though...

Most of the time, the abandoned St Nicholas’ church is under the water, seems to float on the waves. The roof and the bell tower are emerging from the lake immediately offshore of the village that it once served.
During winter times, (thanks to the lower level of the artifical lake) the church is out of the water, providing a good opportunity to take a closer look.
Today, weeds grow from the ruins and the tiled roof of the tower is collapsing.

Zare Lazarevski, alias Navrovo Ski Resort is an ideal place to spend your weekend during winter. Less than 100 km (62 miles) from Skopje, the last 20 km is really beautiful (passing on the bank of the lake, through the National Park). You can rent your ski and boots here from 4 different dealer (for kids 300MKD/boots and skis, for adults: 500MKD/boots and skis).
Lifts are operating from 09.00-15.30. Night ski: from 19.00 There are 3 lifts (2 seated, 2 seated and 1 seated) lead up to the hill (1600 m), from here 11 drag-lifts provide the possibility for ski. On the top of the hill (terminus of the 2 seated lifts) you can find a "berghütte", with sausages, hamburger french fries on the menu (just hamburger was served during my stay). Restroom just in case of emergency. I really liked this resort, definitely will go there again. Prices are friendly, and it was not crowded.
