Mauritius is arguably Africa’s wealthiest destination, a tropical paradise with tons to do. Port Louis, the modern capital of this 38-mile by 29-mile island, is a bustling port with a revitalized waterfront and a busy market. But most visitors gravitate toward resort areas such as Mont Choisy, quiet Trou-aux-Biches and the more bustling Flic en Flac, popular with scuba divers. Rivière Noire is ideal for those looking for great deep-sea fishing.

Next to a public beach which looks onto Le Morne Mountain and the sea where dolphins are sighted on boat trips. Experienced guides show visitors around this 19th century British fort. Come and discover why it was built, how the tower was equipped for soldiers to survive inside during a siege, and see where they ate and slept. Displays include a cannon, coins, military buttons, life size models of soldiers with their muskets and swords.Feel the weight of a real cannonball and see where the powder was kept. Have your camera handy for a photo of yourself dressed up as a soldier with a musket.
A throughly enjoyable guided tour around a lovingly restored landmark. It was great to see the artefacts and hear about the purpose of the tower. Would highly recommend

Our first stop of the day tour was at Aapravasi Ghat. I had no idea of this part of indentured servitude, especially in such a more recent part of history, 1834-1920. Our guide was excellent. We could almost feel the presence of those souls from China, India and South East Asia while they waited to be transshipped to other parts of the world. When we visited the grounds were open every day but Sunday

Maison Eureka is much more than "just" a grand colonial estate. First it was the beutiful garden with heart shaped planting that immediately touched my husband's and my soul. The estate itself has probably been refurbished, for it is in excellent condition, giving a good impression of life in the 19th century. But this is where the adventure begins. There is a path behind the mansion that leads you down to a breathtaking, magical little water fall; it is by all means worth the trouble, so don't miss out on that, and make sure you have good shoes on (no sandals). After you've enjoyed this first encounter, don't go back up, but continue to your right and follow the path upstream until you reach an even more spectacular and romantic water fall. There is no shortcut back, you'll have to follow more or less the same route that you took. Back at the mansion enjoy your spiritual experience with a drink on the patio...
