Built in 1681, Old Ship served two purposes: as a Meeting House where civic issues of the day were discussed, and as a place of worship on Sundays. Lively debates over the Revolution, the form American Democracy would take, and local issues such as property taxes, have taken place under its distinctive timber roof. Architecturally, the Meeting House is an example of Elizabethan Gothic style found in the early settlers native Hingham, England. The great curved timbers that support the roof were cut from bowed oak limbs grown in local forest. Axe hewn, no two are exactly alike in dimension. Although it’s still a mystery, the name Old Ship may have been inspired by the unusual roof structure, which resembles the hull of a ship. This National Historic Landmark, one of America's great buildings, was built in 1877 by architect H.H. Richardson.
this is first of all a church and secondly a tourist attraction. there is a charge to go in. If you are interested in arts and crafts - this is heaven - it was built in 1877 by Henry Hobson Richardson. Woodwork in the pews is beautiful with each roundel at the end of the pews being slightly different. every style of leaded glass is represented including some designed by the British artist Edward Burne Jones and executed by his friend William Morris who was the leader of the arts and crafts movement in England. Everywhere you look there is beautiful stonework, glasswork, painted murals or timber carving.

A historic church dedicated to sailors.
This seaman's church and memorial is lovely and quite moving - there are many plaques and memorials honoring seamen and sailors lost at sea or who died in foreign ports. This is a free museum too. Worth a stop while touring New Bedford.
