Purgatory Chasm State Reservation

Reviewed By staceyb197 - Saint Louis, United States

Spent several days in New England with a friend, geocaching to all the best places. We got here later in the day than we had planned but I’m glad we still stopped by. I wold recommend planning at least several hours here. The 0.5 mile loop isn’t your usual hike! Put on your sturdy boots and plan to be a kid climbing the rocks in the Chasm. This could be a dangerous place for kids (and adults!) so proceed with care. But DO get in there and get a good look!

Redemption Rock

A modest-sized reservation with a momentous history, it was here in April of 1676 that King Philip's War hostage Mary White Rowlandson was returned was Indian captivity.

Cool little place unexpected right off the highway. Stop and read the history, take a trail hike or just climb up the rock and be with nature.

Glacial Potholes

Natural, water-created carvings in the rocks.

This is a quick stop, but it’s so worth it. The view is amazing, and cute shops are nearby so you can get the most out of your stop. Also nearby is the Bridge of Flowers, but it is seasonal and not always open.

Dinosaur Footprints

Imagine small herds of dinosaurs on the shore of a shallow tropical lake as you enjoy a real, up-close look at their fossilized prints, left in sandstone to spur our wonder.

This was really a surreal experience! I am amazed at the clarity of these footprints after 195+million years! I definitely recommend this stop.
