This remarkable huge huge trees have been used to watch out for fires in the national parks. It is one of three trees that have been used as a fire observatory. Fascinating to see brave people climb the rods all the way to the top. Not for me. But loved seeing people climb the heights then come back down. There are good information boards to give you some perspective about the history.

Earlier this month we went exploring and found Chestnut Grove Wines. This hidden gem has got to be Manjimup's BEST kept secret. How did we not know they existed? Manjimup, in the heart of Western Australia’s beautiful Southern Forests, is a food mecca. Chestnut Grove is a family owned and operated vineyard, and they take great pride in turning their grapes into wines of distinction in their winery on the estate. What began as a passion for wine in 1987 for Vic Kordic, has blossomed into an operation producing award winning wines. The Kordic family (Mark & his wife) still heads the vineyard and produce cool climate wines with elegant and unique character. As a small boutique operation Chestnut Grove is estate grown and bottled. Well known for its acclaimed Verdelho, Merlot and Pinot Noir, the wines demonstrate the depth of flavour that can be attained with great soil, weather and wine making techniques. The Peppermint Creek and Tall Timber wines are also made with the same care, quality and distinction. Manjimup often has the coldest maximum temperature in Western Australia. The long, and relatively cool growing season, and the fertile jarrah and karri loam soils create the terroir which is perfect for growing intensely flavoursome grapes. Chestnut Grove's Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been hand picked and cold pressed to capture the pure essence of the variety and brings spice and flavour into gorgeous balance; and paired perfectly with dukkah from The Pickled Wife and wood fired sour dough from the local bakery. Chestnut Grove's verjuice is a modern twist on a classic style that offers the perfect natural acidulant for cooking. Hand picked on a crisp Manjimup morning, the high natural acidity of their Verdelho grape juice can add richness and subtle flavour to any recipe. Mark's passion, knowledge and generousity is oustanding. The cellar door is warm and inviting and we are very keen to keep this hidden gem all to ourselves, but alas supporting local is our passion so do yourselves a favour and get on down to Manjimup BEST kept secret.

This was one of the few wineries that was opened on a Monday. So we stopped there for wine tasting as the restaurant was not opened. We were surprised with the availability of so many truffle products options, and they also sell some nice gift boxes. The wine tasting was great, and we tried all the truffle products (ponzu, truffle oil, mustard truffle, honey truffle, etc). We ended up buying lots of their products as they were all delicious.

Since reopening the campsite following a fire some time ago, the Shannon campgrounds are a must stay place for your camping/bushwalking/relaxing getaway spot. Camp and caravan sites are available throughout the bush area as well as a new, as yet unforrested area. Showers are available but you have to light the chip heater to get the water hot. All part of the experience. Enjoy the peace, the kangaroos and bird life or walk the area and see the amazing fauna. Camp hosts are on site to provide assistance if needed. And it’s only a short drive to Mt Frankland for an awe inspiring view from the top. Well, that’s after a long walk to get there. But well worth it. Thanks DPAW for the great work.

Interesting that these 4 karri trees grew in a straight line. There is a 15 min return trail walk which we did not do but just walked past the Four Aces and rounded the fallen tree back to the car park. There is also an Information Shelter with notes about the karri trees.
