To get the full benefit from this out and back walk it is ideal to time in a minimum of 3 hours either side of low tide so you can walk the cliff top one way and the coast the other. Our experience was that the initial ~100 vertical metre climb to the cliff top and ridge line was easier from the surf club end. We enjoyed stunning views of the coastline, the outer island including Little and Great Barrier and the bays and rocks below. The bush track is nice with the quality of the forest improving at the far end before the decent using the well maintained steps which made getting to the beach easy, the walk back along the coast exploring rock pools and watching the bird life was great. With a stop for lunch and a swim the complete walk took us 3 hours. Mangawhai Heads is ~105km from Auckland’s CDB. There is plenty of parking at the surf club and public toilets. Highly recommended.

Reel Magic is a 6.5 meter alloy hardtop vessel. It is licenced for up to 6 passengers, but if you are fishing it is best to have a limit of 4 passengers. We fish in the Mangawhai Bream Bay area and offshore to the Hen & Chickens islands. Rods are available for hire.

Mangawhai's stories and characters come to life in our modern, vibrant museum. Built with the vision of telling our stories with the Harbour as a focal point, the Mangawhai Museum has been created with a huge input from our community. It will continue to evolve and develop as our stories continue to be told.
Such an interesting museum for both adults and kids. We loved reading about the history of the town, dating right back to the early settlers and gum diggers, up to the fascinating explanation of how the locals banded together to successfully re open the harbour entrance after years of damage caused by storms. We particularly enjoyed learning of how locals had transformed the decommissioned Auckland trams into baches - the replica inside the museum was so well done ! There was a nice room full of surprises for the young ones and a great cafe next door. Highly recommended!

We've stayed at The Views - Mangawhai Heads AirBnbs ( host Claudia ) on Pearl Street which is 2 minutes by car or you can walk to the main beach. Great room to ourselves including kitchenette and a shower, super awesome host which made our stay even better. The main beach itself is beautiful, white sand and blue water - couldn't wish for better. The sand does get really hot so bring footwear to get to your spot. There is a small coffee and ice cream place just before the entrance to the beach. Our new east coast beach hang out. highly recommended.
