Furulunden is a wonderful pearl in the heart of Mandal. Just about a km from the city, Furulunden offers great biking, jogging and walking trails in beautiful nature. The trails lead to various sandy beaches and coves around the peninsula. You can always find a beach in the sun, most shallow, well suited for small children, but some with platforms you can swim out to. You can picnic everywhere, or buy something at the cafe at Risørbanken, or just plukk a handfull of wild berries. The jogging trails are often covered with wood chips providing a soft surface, the bike trails are mostly flat and suited for everyone. If you are camping at Sjosanden, it’s a MUST. Take a morning jog or evening stroll.

Length: 22 kilometres - (including the walk: 25 kilometres). Level: Light Start from the Tourist Information Office and follow the cycle path along the E39 towards Kristiansand. After about 3 km, take the turn off to Tregde. A further 2 km down the road, turn off towards to Skjernoy. This is Norway's southernmost inhabited island. You will find excellent terrain here, both for walking and cycling. Cycle over the bridge and turn right at the foot of the hill to Skjernoysund. The stretch between Skjernoysund and Dyrstad is along bike paths built during the 1880s. You will also see Dyrstad School from 1877. The remainder of the ride is on busy country roads. When you come to the chapel at Farestad, turn left and follow the road back to Mandal.

The town museum is located in a magnificent merchant’s house built in 1805. The museum is home to southern Norway’s largest exhibition on fish, which shows how techniques and equipment have developed over time in the area. The museum also has its own art collection, including Norway’s largest public collection of works by Amaldus Nielsen, probably the most famous artist from southern Norway. There are also works by other local artists such as Adolph Tidemand, Olaf Isaachsen and Gustav Vigeland. You may also vistit the childhood home of the artists Gustav and Emanuel Vigeland at Vigeland Hus in Mandal, only some minutes walk from Mandal museum. The museum houses a worksohop and a small sculpture garden.

The factory was built in 1894, and has been designated a national monument to the textile industry in Norway. Today the factory is a living museum with its own power station, dye house, spinning mill, weaving mill and finishing plant. If you go on a guided tour, you will be able to see the various machines and production prosesses in action. In the summer season, from 15.6-20.8 Guided tours of the factory starts at 11 a.M., 1 And 3 pm. Wool workshop for children starts at 2 pm. Our shop, with products produced at the factory, is open Monday to Friday 11-15.
We went to the mill, to see the still working facility, as well as being a museum of the history of cleaning, combing, spinning and weaving Norwegian wool fabrics ! The museum is open for tours 3 times/day in the summertime, but we went there in rainy November, unannounced, just to see if we could take some pictures and maybe visit the gift shop........ After lurking around inside the entrance, we were greeted by a super friendly employee, who works in the mill, as well as gives tours in the summertime ! She was just closing the gift-shop for the day, and volunteered to show us around the facilities! - We were thrilled, my husband is an engineer, and I am a teacher of textile techniques and history, so, we were so thrilled to be able to see the different machines doing all the intricate process tasks for making wool into usable yarn and fabrics ! Our strongest recommendation to visit !!!!!!!!

Across the river from the centre of Mandal, is an area known as Nedre Malmo. It is on its way to becoming the cultural heart of Mandal and the artistic individuals occupying the buildings on the site of an old furniture factory are leading the way. There are exhibitions, concerts and theme days in the cafe throughout the year. During summer the courtyard is a peaceful oasis by day and an atmospheric venue for concerts in the evening. Visitors are welcome at 'Kulturfabrikken' and those workshops which are open to the public (ceramicist Kristin Antonsen bronze moulder Totto Eide and photographers oystein Ramstad and Odd Arne Nomedal).
