Famed for its soccer team and music scene, which has produced the likes of the Smiths and Oasis, this center for sports and the arts is a down-to-earth and friendly city. The so-called Capital of the North has overcome industrial decline, bombing (in WWII and by the IRA) to become a confident and cosmopolitan city of well over two million. It is well served by a bus and light rail network. Top attractions include the Lowry art complex, arcade Affleck's Palace and Canal Street gay village.

Manchester’s award winning retail, food and drink destination on Oxford Road, under the Mancunian Way. Head to Hatch to discover over 20 independent traders, an outdoor courtyard for street food and drinks in the sun, roof top terraces, covered spaces, sit down indoor dining, shops with products from local makers, street wear, a barber shop... and much much more!
Spotted this place as we went past on the bus. It looked intriguing so we googled it and ended up going there the next day. What a brilliant use of space. A little 'village' of retail units, small independent shops, loads of street food type eateries, bars and an onsite DJ. Music was great, loud enough but not invasive. It helped to give the place a great vibe. Loads of people sat out chatting, chilling and enjoying life. We stopped at Eight ? For a watermelon and thyme cocktail which was absolutely delicious. We sat outside on comfy armchairs with cushions and just people watched. I could have happily spent more time and will be back to try some loaded fries and some mac n cheese another time. Something to look forward to.
