The convent is in an ongoing restoration process. There are several places were you can appreciate the original frescoes and how beautiful it will look once they finish. It's worth taking 30 minutes and getting to know the place.

Hidden up in the hills near Malinalco is the second-most visited shrine in Mexico, and we loved the experience of funneling down through the vendors and food stands to end up at the cathedral built on the riverbank. The place is teeming with pilgrims, some with shrines on their backs, many in matching t shirts and hats. We were the only gringos in town, and we definitely didn't really know what we were doing...we followed the crowd into a line that we thought was to see the "black jesus" but was really just to walk behind the main shrine on the altar, which was covered by a curtain. We also missed the cave entirely, which probably would have been cool. Overall it was fascinating and beautiful and worth experiencing.
