For all the uninitiated, there are two sides to Goa. One is the vibrant, boisterous, party-in-the-air, market filled North Goa. The other is the quaint, idyllic, time stuck, unaffected-by-tourism, beautiful South Goa. If you have picture of Goa in mind as the one with yellow painted houses situated on a narrow lane that leads to a quite beach lined with palm trees then look no further and head to south Goa. We stayed at Majorda in south Goa which is a beautiful village with all the above said attributes of South Goa. The beach has few shacks and we used couple of those during our stay in Majorda. The sea is safe for kids and the shacks serve the necessary food and drinks to keep you going for the day. There were water sports options too and against those were good. There is Utorda beach which is on the same stretch as Majorda if you want to try that. The shopping options around Majorda is limited. Do bear in mind that if you are visiting off season or other than peak season (which is either December until mid Jan), then you may want to check in with the hotel guys ahead if the shacks would be open. Other than that this place is highly recommended.

As always it is a delight to spend time on this beautiful stretch of beach. We have just returned from spending around 8 weeks (13th Oct to 9th Dec) in Majorda/Betalbatim, about 10 minute walk to this beach. We did spend a lot of time here. When we first arrived there were no shacks on the beach, due to licensing issues, there were a couple on private land. This provided us with a rare sight of seeing the beach devoid of the clutter of the shacks, umbrellas and sunbeds. We were able to look up towards Utorda in one direction and Colva in the other all we saw was golden sand and the odd fishing boat. Beach life soon returned to normal, the shacks took their places along the beach. Still one of the best places to spend the day, at our favourite shack, Lavina's, enjoying delicious food for lunch and a cold beer later on watching the sunset.

Carpe Diem is an Art and Learning Centre that houses an Art Gallery, Cafe, Art Store and a Ceramic Studio in addition to organising and conducting classes and activities for all ages. From art classes, book readings and pottery to yoga, theatre and music, there is something for everyone. Our in-house garden cafe offers you a range of coffees and teas in addition to shakes, sandwiches, sweet and savoury waffles, wraps, pastries and more. Art exhibitions are held throughout the year, though the wet months usually are a quieter period for the same.
I don't know whether I should be ashamed or proud of this fact, but I have literally been going to Carpe Diem every day for the past 10 days (and plan to keep going until my holidays finish!) Their menu has a lot of non-veg options but, even as a vegetarian (and therefore having substantially less options) I am still absolutely satisfied by their food--not to mention that they also have really good coffee and (non-alcoholic) coolers. Try the watermelon mint cooler, or their cappuccino (with a properly impressive milk foam!) the espresso gelato, the simple but delicious veggie wrap, or the veg momos, or the freshly baked chocolate brownie...heck, just try it all! Their prices are affordable and good care is put into their food quality and presentation. One thing to note: they do not have AC, but their tables are comfortably within reach of the fans and (as someone who has worked there even in the peak of the afternoon heat) it is well worth it! And, to top it all off, this place is way more than just a cafe. They have artisan crafts (pottery, jewelry, textiles, etc.) for sale, you can sign up for a class to learn a new art skill, and they have an entire art gallery on display--free to admire! They've adopted in a number of stray dogs, and have a jar for donations to go towards the animals' needs. Do yourself a favour and go check out, and support, all their amazing initiatives!
