What to do and see in London, England: The Best Distilleries

June 18, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

The crown jewels, Buckingham Palace, Camden Market…in London, history collides with art, fashion, food, and good British ale. A perfect day is different for everyone: culture aficionados shouldn't miss the Tate Modern and the Royal Opera House. If you love fashion, Oxford Street has shopping galore. For foodies, cream tea at Harrod’s or crispy fish from a proper chippy offers classic London flavor. Music and book buffs will love seeing Abbey Road and the Sherlock Holmes Museum (at 221B Baker Street, of course).

The Ginstitute

The Ginstitute provides a unique and unrivalled opportunity to better understand the true spirit of London. Patrons begin their spirituous journey in the UK's second smallest museum - The Ginstitute. Our Gin Instructor will take you through the long and frequently miserable, history of gin. From the drink's origin as a medicine, through the gin craze that gripped Britain for 200 years and onto the Golden Era of gin as a cocktail ingredient and finally how gin has taken it's position in the modern world. Once the History lesson is over, it's time to head upstairs to The Still Room, where Ginterns will test their senses with a tutored tasting and nosing of the key botanical ingredients of London Dry Gin, ready to create their own bespoke one-of-a-kind, unique and hopefully delicious gin. To mark their graduation, students will be presented with a full-size bottle of their own personal blend, the recipe for which will be kept on file for you to reorder as often as you need! Sessions need to be booked in advance.

As a founding member of the distillery, I had been invited for a tour and tasting with a few of my friends. We spent three fantastic hours at the distillery. First we were offered a welcome cocktail with one of the distillery's whiskies, and then we were shown around the small but very well organised production, where everything is done under one roof. We saw the direct-fired pot stills, tasted some new make running out of them, had a look at the blender's corner, and explored the warehouse. Our guide Lucas told us everything about the distillery and the process of making their whisky. During the tasting session we were offered a few samples (new make, virgin oak, re-charred, bourbon, sherry, port and even a dram straight from their experimental Laphroaig cask) and found them quite outstanding for such an early age. We believe in great future of this distillery and will look forward to their oncoming releases. Well done, guys!

I booked this gin experience for my Partner's birthday and we loved every minute of it. The venue is very cool and the whole experience was fantastic from start to finish!! It was great learning about the history of gin, I learnt so much in the short space of time. All of the drinks that you get to try are delicious (yup. I was slightly tipsy at the end). I really enjoyed the whole process from choosing our own herbs & spices to create our own unique flavour, to measuring, and then distilling the gin yourself. Its worth mentioning that with the current situation, there Covid-19 measures in place so we felt safe the whole time. There's even 58Gin branded hand sanitiser as they started making hand sanitiser during lockdown. 10/10! So if you fancy doing something a bit different in London, I definitely recommend this experience :)

Bermondsey Distillery

When Christian Jensen first tasted the vintage gins from London's lost distilleries, he began a journey. Creating a finely balanced gin that honoured these forgotten recipes became his obsession. That's why Jensen's is distilled in small batches, using only traditional gin botanicals. So there's really nothing new about Jensen's, and that's why it's different. Distilled in Bermondsey, London, Jensen's is gin as it was. Gin as it should be. We offer public gin tour experiences which take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays at 3pm & 7pm. We are open as a shop Mon-Fri between the hours of 10am-6pm. We also open up as a bar and a shop on Saturdays 10:30am-6pm and Sundays 11am-4pm.

Lovely welcome from Helga from Iceland, who is a mine of information and facts. We learnt so much and built on prior knowledge over a couple of hours. Lovely arrival G&T and I've discovered that a Gin based Martini is not bad. All Covid safety in place. Bought some bottles of Gin and some 'proper' tonics. Quite expensive but expected when buying from a small craft establishment and for quality. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.

So I'm already a huge fan of Jim and Tonic and their original Elephant and Castle location, so was super excited to hear they've opened a new venue in the heart of mayfair. The setting is really spectacular. The bar is located at the alter of a beautiful old church, which is super impressive when you first walk in. They had an amazing selection of delicious, high quality cocktails (as you would expect from Jim & Tonic) made with their handcrafted, small-batched gins which are made in the heart of London. They also have a selection of all their beloved favourite G&T combinations. Other amenities in the venue is great, and you are spoilt for choice with high quality food venues. It's a really great spot and will be one of the first places I go back to once we're out of lockdown! Great location for a date night, catching up with a group of friends, or a perfect shopping break as it's just a stones throw from Oxford Street. Really is a must visit for gin and foodie lovers alike!

If you're ever in London, make sure you visit the distillery. The experience is exceptional right from the warm welcome at reception, throughout the self guided museum at the start and then onto the guided tour of the distillery itself with samples and fknally ending with a refreshing Gin & Tonic. Our host Katie, certainly knew her Gin & Tonics and was informative and most interesting throughout the tour. There is of course a shop on site but with absolutely no pressure to buy.
