What to do and see in London, England: The Best Bodies of Water

March 24, 2022 Diedre Savory

The crown jewels, Buckingham Palace, Camden Market…in London, history collides with art, fashion, food, and good British ale. A perfect day is different for everyone: culture aficionados shouldn't miss the Tate Modern and the Royal Opera House. If you love fashion, Oxford Street has shopping galore. For foodies, cream tea at Harrod’s or crispy fish from a proper chippy offers classic London flavor. Music and book buffs will love seeing Abbey Road and the Sherlock Holmes Museum (at 221B Baker Street, of course).

Regent's Canal

Reviewed By Dencroft - Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

We try to walk the Regent Canal at least once a year from Kings Cross Station up to little Venice (about 6km) with a detour around Coal Drops Yard. Saturday afternoon on an overcast November, nice walk to Camden which was absolutely heaving with people once through - again really nice walk, stopped at crockers folly for a glass of wine and beer (beautiful interior) on Aberdeen Place as you have to come up from the canal towpath. Then on into little Venice for late lunch at the Warwick Castle Pub. Got the underground train back via bakerloo line at Warwick Avenue. Fantastic afternoon as always!

South Norwood Lake and Grounds

Reviewed By luckieststar

i live right round the corner from this gem of a park and have been going every day since i was a child. i usually take my dog to walk here and there are many amazing parts within it. i usually start my walk by exiting straight off the path at the top left and going round from there as it is excellent for my dog. then there is a massive field with woods attached to run a dog and the woods make for an amazing scenic walk. in the summer you can often watch cricket games on the lower field. the lake is very good for runs or scootering little kids. the little kiosk is very useful for picnics, surrounded by nature animals. the man running the kiosk, Hitash, is very friendly and deserves appreciation. the playground at the top has an amazing makeover and is perfect for your kids to play in. the lake can be boated on on sundays and you can fish there outside breeding season. in conclusion, this park is the gem of croyden for dog walking, sports, kids, runs, boating, fishing, nature watching, picnics and just meetups!

Highgate Bathing Pond

We loved our visit here - a very special experience, swimming in the wild on hampstead heath - such a relaxing, peaceful and lovely experience. So so glad we did it. There are lifeguards and changing facilities but no lockers for valuables, so don't take any or you will have to trust everyone. Towels not available for rent so remember to take one. More of a rustic experience but that is what makes it so special. We went to the mixed pool. So wish we had something like this nearer to us.

Tooting Bec Lido

Went to Tooting Bec Lido during the heatwave of late June/July 2018. The place is amazing. It has that retro British charm about it, it harks back to the days when there were more outdoor swimming pools in existence. The water is cold but once you get going it is refreshing and just whats needed. The perfect tonic to 30 degree heat. The cafe serves typical beach food, burgers, panini's, baguettes, ice creams cold drinks etc, all reasonably priced and very nice. The staff are friendly too. And if the sun gets too much for you there is always a nice grassy area that is shaded under the trees. All in all its great the Lido is still open, a great place to come in the summer.

Serpentine Boating Lake

Reviewed By 227ianc - London, United Kingdom

The Serpentine has two halves. The western half in Kensington Gardens, known as Long Water, is more natural and quiet; the eastern half is busier and is where all the activity takes place, including the cafe and pedalos negotiating the swans and geese. Discretely overlooking the lake is a monument to Queen Caroline who was responsible for its creation in 1730.
