Comedy Works has been Denver's premier destination for the very best in stand-up comedy since 1981. As one of the nation's true comedy landmarks, we routinely attract the country's top comedians. We also enjoy a strong reputation for developing new acts and fostering a talented base of local comedians. Many of our homegrown acts have become major forces in the national comedy scene, appearing on Comedy Central, The Tonight Show, Craig Ferguson, and Last Comic Standing, which our very own Josh Blue won.
Returned to the Downtown location after two weeks away (before it was extremely funny Joe List) to see the best comic by far since Tommy Johnagin (back in 2016 at the South Landmark location who came in second place on Last Comic Standing competition but he got robbed and should have won it all). Christie was our waitress and it was obvious she was assigned too many people to effectively provide responsive quality service, as getting around to all of her customers to place orders and later on check for drink refills took too long, definitely much slower service than two weeks ago. The middle seats feel more cramped for space than if you are lucky enough to be assigned seats at either end of the long rows. The MC/host had some inappropriate and unfunny jokes that did not go over well at all with the audience, but thankfully his act was short enough to be almost tolerable. The first warm up comedian was announced as a Denver regular but this is the first time hearing from him, and he was decently funny. The second warm up comedian was announced as “a policeman who travels the country”, so by the time he came on stage we had lowered our expectations. We were pleasantly surprised how funny he was, and he could definitely be a headliner someday as the audience enjoyed him. Ian Bagg was the feature act filling in for Bobby Lee who cancelled a few weeks prior. Ian was fantastically amazing with how quick witted he is and his act is about 80% impromptu each night based on his numerous questions to different audience members. He ended up talking to maybe around 15-20 attendees by the end, and he was able to turn conversations quickly into jokes with relevant punchlines. We almost ended up coming back for a Saturday night show just to see Ian with a new and fresh audience after we laughed so hard so often with so many of his jokes. Ian is definitely a “must see” comic and I hope Comedy Works invites him back soon to appear at the South Landmark location for his next visit hopefully later this year. Fantastic comedian for sure. Parking downtown is only $5 with validation and you only have to walk across the adjacent street to reach Writers Square.
