Plas Newydd House and Garden

Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait. Due to an ongoing reservicing project in the house, some rooms or areas may be closed. Opening and tour arrangements may vary.

This is a really excellent all round visit: beautiful spacious grounds with vistas of the Menai Strait, Snowdon etc & even red squirrels (my only regret is their moving too swiftly for me to get a photograph). Hats off to their inside work, keeping much open despite the huge scale renovations & managing to tell the tale of the house & explain about the ongoing work. I appreciated the video of the Marguess of Anglesey talking about Beaudesert a great deal. Staff in House, Cafe & Shop were top class.

Llanfairpwll Railway Station

Reviewed By MarkB_GCI

I was on my way back to Manchester, so caught an early train and stopped off at Llanfairpwll Station for the obligatory photo at the sign on the platform. I had a few hours until my onward train connection so went for a quick mooch inside the large touristy store alongside (James Pringle) before carrying on for a walk to the Menai Bridge viewpoint and St. Tysilio's Church, some 45mins walk away. On the way I passed a tall monument poking above the trees; this was "The Marquess of Anglesey's Column" which sadly was closed (see other contributors' reviews) but worth a brief detour to see anyway. Good points 99% of the people on the platform will gladly take your picture by the sign for you, as chances are they are there for the same reason !!! Clean and tidy Scenery (take a short walk to the Menai Bridge viewpoint or down to St. Tysilio's Church, one of the two churches from which the town takes its full name) Bad points Quite expensive in the large touristy shop (a minor point, but I guess you have to buy a souvenir of your trip here... lol) NB beware - some trains will only stop on request here (look for the "x" between the departure times in the timetable, e.g., 14x11 means the train will stop at 1411h ONLY if you signal clearly to the driver or you let the on-board train manager know; no "x" means the train will always stop here). Make sure you check the timetable !!!
