WWT Llanelli is a 450 acre mosaic of lakes, scrapes, pools, streams and lagoons adjoining the salt marshes and the shore of the scenic Burry Inlet. Whether you're a serious bird watcher or just looking for fun and relaxation, you can have a day of discovery whatever the weather. Hand feed some of the rarest birds in the world, see our colourful Carribean flamingos, go bug hunting or pond dipping, enjoy bird watching from our hides and explore the reserve to see butterflies, dragonflies and more! A private Victorian house, set in a secluded location on the outskirts of Llanelli, virtually unchanged since the 19th century. Still under restoration, the house contains a fine collection of paintings by the current owner's great-grandfather and his artist friends and contemporaries. There is plenty for families to enjoy here, with a tower to be climbed if the weather is dry. The woodland gardens contain an interesting collection of plants which favour the mild climate and acid soil found here. Tours are open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month between April and September. The tours are nearly always conducted by a member of the Mansel Lewis family and conclude with home-made refreshments served in the dining room. Private tours by appointment. The Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway is a charity (charity no. 1087985) based at the former Cynheidre Colliery site, 6 miles north of Llanelli and is a growing tourist attraction which is bringing regeneration to a former coal mining community. On open days the railway currently offers short diesel train rides, a heritage centre, a buffet car serving refreshments, lake with dipping platforms and several other small features. There is ample car parking on site. Please note that the site is only open to the public on specific dates.
